US: Breaking Bad Season 5 Part II - The finale.

Can't think of a bad episode throughout all 5 seasons. It's by far and away the best tv series I've seen. It almost became a story of Jessie's redemption towards the end with Walt's story becoming incidental. Walt's story was always set in stone, he was way past the point of redemption and was always going to die. Jessie on the other hand always had the potential to better himself and grow in character. By the final episode he did just that.

I would say the episode about the fly was a little to much for me. It just grates on me for some reason.

Hah, that's one of my faves. It's just so creative and memorable.

The fly appears later on in Season 5a, when Walt is just sat in their base of operations room ignoring the fly, staring into space. I don't quite get the significance but there's some obviously intentional symbology I'm missing there...

The Fly episode was ballsy to create. No other show could get away with a full ep about catching a fly. Actually, it was about a lot more than just about fly. Its one of the more memorable episodes for me.

Its really an episode about character study. It shows us where Walt and Jesse are mentally.

I didn't enjoy it, but it was an important episode as it showed clearly how obsessive Walt had become and that he wasn't willing to let anything get the better of him, even something as irrelevant as a fly (although given the lab conditions it was important to remove the fly to prevent contamination)

This is the kind of response I'd prefer to see here, lets try and keep everybody's contributions to this thread on topic, anymore abusive responses from either camp (for or against BB) won't be appreciated...

Well after avoiding all the hype regarding BB, and really not even knowing what it was all about, possible reasons at the time for not being too much of a fan of US series, I took it upon myself to watch BB, in its entirety. That was about four weeks ago. I finished the series finale only the night before last. THANK YOU NETFLIX !!! This has undoubtedly been the best TV I've ever watched in my 41yrs. Unfortunately I know that I'll probably never see anything as good again, outside of an excellent movie here or there.. Just glad to experienced it. Find myself thinking about it all day long. Even read this 49page thread in its entirety. Something I never ever do on OcUK. Not read into some of the things like some of you lot.. Just enjoyed the show for what it is. Enjoyed seeing Walt's weaknesses at times his cold hearted decisions, even the comedy element. Every character stood out on their own. Simply amazing. Really the word masterful comes to mind. Vince Gilligan and his team really done a stellar job on us all. There may have been a few slow episodes here and there. But they were few and far between.

Wife due to family visiting stopped watching at the start of Series 4.. Soon as they're gone, we'll be sitting down to re-commence where she left off.

Amazing stuff. Glad i also avoided any spoilers..

I haven't risked reading anything in this thread as I'm still on S4E6.....

Just wanted to pop in and say Breaking Bad is the best thing I've seen on TV!

Vince is a genius. Love the fact he worked on X-Files too, the second best thing I've seen on TV.

Just bought the entire series on BD.. Not the one that's in a plastic drum special edition, but in separate seasons. $94 total, after i applied a $20 discount i had on amazon.

He's got a new project in the Fall 2014 season called Battle Creek. Already got a full 13 episode order which CBS have guaranteed they will show all of. Very rare. I think they're placing too much on Gilligan's name to carry the show. Hopefully it'll be good.

Finished watching this a couple days ago. What can I say other than "WOW".

The whole show to me was about justifying evildoing. This starts happening right from the start when Walt physically attacks the bullies when Jr is buying his new jeans. Even though most people wouldn't rise to them, yet it's amazing how far we sympathise even when it starts turning into murder.

The show is brilliant in that the point of de-sympathising with the protagonist (Walter) is dynamic. When he watches Jane die, when he poisons the kid, when he shoots Mike? etc. So much of it is justified which makes you question your own morality, which is amazing.

One thing is at the end when he's seeing Skyler for the last time. He begins to say "Everything i've done, I did it for...." skyler interrupts saying "don't say it was for the family", and then he continues "It was for me".

Was he going to say "For me" or "for the family"? In my opinion he was going to say "For the family" but only changed it because Skyler interrupted, otherwise Vince wouldn't have written it in such a way as to create doubt. The line would have continued without interruption. This further backs up how twisted and manipulative Walt had become.

Also, if you watch the Pilot straight after the Finale, Walt's personality makes so much sense. For example how one of the students he beats up in the Junior's new jeans scene says "Psycho" before walking away. We're all initially rooting for Walt, even though two evils don't make a right.

Even though Walt is a bad guy (a drug dealer who kills people, for his own gains), I found myself supporting and rooting for him.

Exactly the same goes for The Shield (cops who have killed for their own gains), I find myself hoping they dont get caught.

Watched a few episodes of the show The Guardian last night (the one with the guy from the Mentalist) and there have been a few BB actors in it already. First was Skyler looking a lot younger but still unattractive then Todd as a ginger haired little kid in a wheelchair and then lastly Jessie as a skinny gay teen.

It's weird seeing them in things they've done in the past pre-BB.

Jessie is in an episode of Criminal mins (season 1 or 2 can't remember) as a Goth. Only as a bit character so didn't stick in my mind until I caught the re-run of the episode with him in.

I haven't watched the Shield (though it is on my list) but generally I think it is a sign of a well written show where they get the audience to go against their beliefs. By this, most people under all normal circumstances and in most shows would be after the bad guy to be caught and punished yet shows like BB (and I think Continuum does it pretty well too) make you actually root for the baddies.
