That’s not going to happen. The majority of the French are quietly Catholic and even those that aren’t don’t like their traditions and history being messed with.

With an election coming next year, Macron will block this or he’ll loose support amongst the centre-right Republicans.
 
Sound like a good idea. When you have a chance to revamp a historic religious site, why not make it into a fun museum for tourists.

Woke just seems to be a catchall word used by people who are scared of things that change or things that are different. The article seems to suggest a number of proposals have been put forward for the rebuild of the cathedral and one of those ideas is a modern update. That's considered woke? :o

Yup

Woke is basically whatever the person using it wants it to be when mocking someone/something else, often when they don't like change (or things staying the same), or cannot understand, as in this instance the concept of an "any and all ideas# meeting where everything is up for discussion and usually 95% of it will be disposed*.

The same sort of people that get upset that modern houses are built so that when they get older (or if they have an accident) you don't have to rebuild the whole thing to allow them access. They'd be calling the idea of seatbelts woke and not drink driving "virtue signalling" if it was new.


*I suspect some bits will make it through, probably the most innocuous things that will still cause outrage like maybe making it disabled accessible where possible (including potentially better lighting for those with reduced vision), and if they put in toilets having them "gender neutral" individual stalls of the UK/EU style (rather than the stupid US style where you've got a huge gap at the top and bottom of each stall).

They should at leat have the decency to be honest and openly advocate for the place to be demolished and replaced with something else. With a different name, obviously, as it would be a different thing. That's what they want to do, so they should be honest about it.

Frankly, I'm amazed they have ever considered 'revamping' it, given the amount of money spent trying to keep it just the way it was. The punishment for these people should be equally medieval.

If the ship of Theseus had been rebuilt into something else it would no longer be the same thing. But the whole point of the question is that the ship of Theseus remained the same. Part were replaced on a like for like basis. So the question of the ship of Theseus is fundamentally unlike this situation.

Possibly depends on the context. If a man loses his arm, is he the same man? You could answer "yes" and "no" depending on the context of the discussion.

I guess it's entirely subjective as well. If it's broadly the same construction but with some minor of even significant changes, but remains on the same site, roughly the same size, and performing the same function, then it could be the same church. Someone else might have a much narrower definition and decide that even updating the internal wiring makes it a different church. That its identity and character is derived from its flaws and its age and its current state of repair/disrepair. Depends what's important to you. The function? The age? The materials? Or just its significance as a landmark?

If you re-roof a church I doubt many would claim it's a different church. That would just be maintenance. Re-roof it with entirely different materials and some might claim it's no longer the same. Some people obsess over small details. Sometimes that's a valid perspective, sometimes it's petty.

It's yet another thing that we can all disagree on :p

Which is essentially what it was before? The funniest thing for me is the number of non believers who suddenly have an opinion on such things when what has it got to do with them?

The Church of England has a huge problem
with the cost of running and maintaining it’s building but you wouldn’t believe the hassle they get from locals etc when they try and modernise even the most basic things. Suddenly everyone wants ownership and a say!

Yep, it's just the typical regressive right/Conservative view where they are perpetually fearful of change and anything outside of tradition, especially if it involves youth culture, is "the downfall of society" :cry:

Surely that should be up to the buildings owners to decide? When was it decided that religious buildings should no longer be allowed to evolve to suit the needs of the faith that own/use them? (including turning them into an interactive museum to generate funds, although Jesus probably wouldn’t have been keen).
 
Those with Grade 1 or Grade 2 listed houses should just say they want to revamp them Disney style a la Notre Dame and see what the jobsworths in planning say... ;)
