BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

:D

No, do it for the immortality.

It's always a weird criticism that kind of thing. Like people donating to charity for the vanity or whatever. Who cares?! They're making a difference.

In this case though this article is a joke. One sentence explains it all:

"They want to know what exactly their money is being spent on and if they agree to it before they hand it over, and not just to pay employees' salaries."

Makes total sense but maybe the catholic church isn't use to that.

Don't see why a single billionaire or even multi millionaire doesn't just sort it all out in one swoop. They'd instantly become the peoples hero as well. Standard optics politics as it stands these days I guess....

Imagine not instantly handing over hundreds of millions of € to people with no plan.

Just make a shopping list and a list of people in charge so the billionaires can see they're funding a proper job not a circus.

Owning a massive wreck doesn't turn you into a project organising mastermind after all.

The employees needed to mount a massive reconstruction project are a bit different from those needed to operate the cathedral normally, no?
It doesn't make any sense to interpret the statement that way. Firstly, the people doing the reconstruction will be contractors not employees.

If you assume good faith from the "donors" then, yes, I'd agree but the whole thing seems very much like an excuse not to actually pay up, combined with a condescending attitude towards the people who are actually guiding the restoration.
