BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

Too early to tell. Of course it can be rebuilt, anything can
Would you want to re-create it, tho?

Surely part of its appeal was its great age.

"Here's the Notre Dame cathedral we built last year. It's as close as we could get to the real thing."

Let it go... build something equally impressive but different in its place.

e: Chap on the news reckons the stone structure is not really in any danger and the wooden interior is not essential to its structural integrity.

That said they were saying earlier the stone itself is reaching the end of its life...

So who knows.

Looking at some of the pictures I'm totally gutted :(

I went there in my teens and the building was the most amazing thing thing I'd seen, I do hope that it can somehow be repaired - although that will take years, if not decades, and could run into the €100's of millions..

I would think they would be burnt out inside just leaving the outershell. Looks like all that’s left is the outer walls now.

Which if the fire takes too long to put out, will combine with the water damage to destroy the now weak 1000 year old stone, a bbc travel show had a guy from the notre dame trust (I assume) basically rub the stone off with his fingers.

It’s already taking too long, so I assume the (interior) stone is mostly suspect now. Even if you want to keep the building, some of it will be irreparable and need partially demolished to save the rest.

So awful :(

God I bloody hate the BBC's reporting though... they were just talking to some French minister about it and asked them "So how does it make you feel seeing the cathedral on fire like that?"... Really!? Then they talked to an eyewitness and asked "Right so you saw flames, and where were the flames?" On the Cathedral obviously... FML

Earlier:
Bloke on the phone> omg I've just seen the spire collapse
Carrie whatshername> we're getting reports that the spire has collapsed, can you see if that's true?
Bloke> literally just said that...

They just asked some guy if he could smell the smoke in the air......

Keep asking totally inappropriate questions to people who wouldn't have a clue on how to answer.

LOL, that outside source guy is hillarious.

"Can you smell the smoke? It looks like a huge fire. Can you smell it? Is there smoke?"

LOL. Quality BBC interview with a student.
