**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Coming up to my 6th anniversary since being MD'd out at the start of my 22nd year and I still miss the cameraderie more than anything. I've had about 7 jobs since I left and every interview I went to I was offered the job. Since I left though I've worked in IT roles but for the MOD for the last 5 years. It's easy money and I still get to work with the military so I can have a good laugh and take the mickey out of the RAF :)

Although it's been 6 years since I left I still don't feel that I have found the right job for me in civvy street. Although I have lots of IT quals and the experience I just can't be bothered working in that environment anymore. If it was up to me I'd retire but my Mrs says I can't. She's right though, I'd get bored very easily.

Lemonkettaz - Im still serving but deal with Reserves daily as they are attached to my Regt, if you have any questions i should be able to answer them. Im RMP by trade but policy is the same for all arms at the moment.

Yeh just a few questions , im still reg at the min but just keeping my options open. What sort of timetable is it to transfer? Incentives? If i was to transfers id be umemployed for a while so is there anyway of working almost fulltime with the reserves untill i found employment.

Id transfer to same capbadge. However the capbadge being the same it is a para squadron so would i be on entrant daily pay until completion of p company?

Its a local reserve centre so i was thinking of popping in when im home on a weekend, bit of a bone question but would that be ok? Ha

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the process of getting out at the moment Lemonkattaz, with the intent on transferring to the reserves if I can get where I want.

What cap badge are you transferring from? I have no idea about the Para side of things.

Is there any reason you think you'd be unemployed for a while? I'm looking at 3 months off at the end of my service with all my accumulated leave and what not, where I won't be in work, I'd have handed in my ID card, but I'll still be getting paid until my regular service is terminated and I'm transferred to the reserves.

I will also get £5,000 golden hello for transferring, paid over 3 years, in what I believe to be £2k, £2k & £1k lumps, which is also taxable.

I have never heard of that, as when I finished my time all I got was a resettlement course and a part pension. :(

P.V.R stands for Pay Voluntary Release. That.s why you hand over cash to do it, which can cost a lot depending on how long you have served and your trade. (The more the MOD has spent on you the more it costs you.)

Sorry for the delay.

Time table of getting in is dependant on how fast you get processed. (how long is a piece of string, civi contract)

There are full time jobs in the reserve but on a specific contract, if you have a decent AO/PSI they can also help get regular work, but nothing is set in stone nor should it be expected.

I take it you have not yet passed P Coy? Why Not? Reserve P Coy is much easier than regular, but would look much better if you are winged up when you get to the reserve unit.

Of course tipping up is encouraged, try go on a drill night speak to as many people as you can, if you need a number let me know, just let me know and ill private message you.

It might be what it stands for, but you don't pay to get released. Though, maybe if you have signed a return of service for a course etc. This is normally only after basic training though.

Every one has been on Open engagement since the early - mid 90's
PVR (Premature Voluntary Release) was a way of paying to get yourself out early if you'd signed on for one of the long term contracts. 6,9, 22 years etc.
If you were on one of these contracts then you got a little bit of extra money every month but didn't get the 5 and 8 year commitment bonuses. Like I said. I doubt there's many people still serving now who would be eligible to PVR (Not sure on officers though??)

There is a lot of contradictory advice here. I think this is because we have a range of people from different cap badges and at different join dates. This means some of us will have received very different terms of service, and that's before we consider differences of commissioned vs non (Des, I know guys on 22 yr engagements but still receiving a 8yr retention bonus).

It would be best that a person thoroughly checks the details of their own terms of service and seek advice from HR/ADMIN/manning if still unsure.

I joined the RSigs in 1992 and I was on open engagement. I know a few guys that came through Harrogate that were on the old terms but I'm pretty sure anyone joining after me were on open engagement.
RSigs wise anyway.
