**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

That is well old information now. Most people are on V-Eng (Versatile Engagement) contracts, which is now pretty much 3 or 4 years minimum service depending on trade, then you're in a 12 year contract, which at the end can be renewed for another 12 years, then following that, a further 6 years.

You can choose to end your service early after serving your minimum service, with 12 months notice to leave. This is now called NTT (Notice to Terminate).

Here is a nice and boring document on it all.

With regards to the golden hello, I'll have to check on that anyway as it depends where I potentially go in the reserves world.

I got offered another 2 years on V-Eng when I had 3 weeks left in the army!! I'd already found a job, and been working there for 3 months, whilst on termination leave.

I politely said "No thanks" :D

Be aware that your tax will be screwed up next year so be sure to keep all your pay statements etc handy.
I told HMRC I was working two jobs and gave them all the details and they still messed it up.
I've just done a self assessment last month and had a bit to pay them (£900-odd). I've also been paying too much tax on my pension which they promptly repaid and I got a nice bonus for overpaying my NI so it's all good in the end :D

From left to right, my guesses are.

Lance Corporal Leakey who was awarded a VC recently.

Citation in part:
"On the 22 August 2013, Lance Corporal Leakey, deployed on a combined UK/US assault led by the United States Marine Corp into a Taliban stronghold to disrupt a key insurgent group.
On leaving their helicopters, the force came under machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire, pinning down the command group on the exposed forward slope of a hill. For an hour the team attempted to extract from the killing zone; a Marine Corp Captain was shot and wounded and their communications were put out of action.
Lance Corporal Leakey said:
'When you hear there’s a man down, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Clearly then your plans change.'
Realising the seriousness of the situation - and with complete disregard for his own safety he dashed across a large area of barren hillside being raked with machine gun fire. As he crested the hill, the full severity of the situation became apparent: approximately twenty enemy had surrounded two friendly machine gun teams and a mortar section, rendering their critical fire support ineffective.
Under fire yet undeterred by the very clear and present danger, Lance Corporal Leakey ran across the exposed slope of the hill three times to initiate casualty evacuation, re-site machine guns and return fire. His actions proved the turning point, inspiring his comrades to fight back with renewed ferocity. Displaying gritty leadership well above that expected of his rank, Lance Corporal Leakey’s actions singlehandedly regained the initiative and prevented considerable loss of life."

With regards to the golden hello, I'll have to check on that anyway as it depends where I potentially go in the reserves world.

This is what everyone was signed up to when I joined last year, minimum of 4 years on a 12 year contract. Glad I joined up, makes a big change from doing admin work.

I'm in the process of getting out at the moment Lemonkattaz, with the intent on transferring to the reserves if I can get where I want.

What cap badge are you transferring from? I have no idea about the Para side of things.

Is there any reason you think you'd be unemployed for a while? I'm looking at 3 months off at the end of my service with all my accumulated leave and what not, where I won't be in work, I'd have handed in my ID card, but I'll still be getting paid until my regular service is terminated and I'm transferred to the reserves.

I will also get £5,000 golden hello for transferring, paid over 3 years, in what I believe to be £2k, £2k & £1k lumps, which is also taxable.

Sorry for the delay.

Time table of getting in is dependant on how fast you get processed. (how long is a piece of string, civi contract)

There are full time jobs in the reserve but on a specific contract, if you have a decent AO/PSI they can also help get regular work, but nothing is set in stone nor should it be expected.

I take it you have not yet passed P Coy? Why Not? Reserve P Coy is much easier than regular, but would look much better if you are winged up when you get to the reserve unit.

Of course tipping up is encouraged, try go on a drill night speak to as many people as you can, if you need a number let me know, just let me know and ill private message you.

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the late response my part ha been away on a cadre.

I was under the impression before hand that you can transfer regular to reserve whilst still in, however I have learned that you have to sign off then transfer during the sign off period.

This doesn't change much as I am still looking to probably do this next year sometime, by that point I will of picked up and this throws further questions :) as in do you or can you keep rank when transferring?

Id be going from RE to RE :) so no change apart from the reserve sqn is a para sqn attached to 23 engineer regiment. Being class 1 trade trained already I am assuming I can walk straight into the reserve RE sqn and it being no problem it's not like I have to completely start afresh.
