**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

I think you're misinterpreting what I said. My advice is to ask manning whether going to IOT will prevent his promotion.

Sorry I must be confusing his post with yours slightly. Yes youre right there.

In answer to his question, if offered IOT and tapes at the same time it would be a case of pick one or the other wouldn't it?

That was more what my points were aimed at, sorry for the confusion

His concern is if he goes to IOT and fails IOT training he will lose out on the potential promotion to Cpl, thus rendering him back to square one as SAC.

I know what my choice would be; go to IOT and pass :p

IF i was to come off the board and was at the same time offered a place in IOT ( These are huge IF's and this is merely me speculating) and i turned down promotion. Then if i failed IOT for whatever reason, i'm guessing i would remain an SAC for atleast another 2 years due to me turning down the promotion.

^^ was the original point I was referring to, all well and good saying don't fail, but I wouldn't be turning down career progression when you could apply again for IOT

Yes! That was exactly it. My apologies if i wasn't clear in the initial post.

I'll speak directly with the OC of our support section and see what he says. I would imagine that if i was put in such a position, i would have to choose one or the other. Manning is very unpredictable at the moment! Especially at the junior level.

But in the mean team i will just continue with my preperation and such. Doing plenty of reading & fitness as of late. Even if i do end up applying maybe a year or so down the line, it wouldn't hurt to prep now.

He needs to confirm that going to IOT will or will not deny him promotion.

In fact in that case his local admin might be able to answer that as you have to sign the conditional acceptance of promotion form, I can't remember whats on it exactly but that should shed some light on it. I'm sure its something to do with future availability.

Either way apologies for convoluting the situation/thread, I'll get back in my box...

Got a practice interview with the OC base support squadron tomorrow.

He's from a recruiting background and he has said he will debrief me honestly; if i am not up to scratch he will send me away and allow me to have another go in a few weeks time.

Done plenty of reading and such, looking forward to it! Once i'm comfortable with everything i'm going to put my paperwork and try go for a comission, within the realms of the internal comissioning scheme.

I'm due to be attending a passing out parade at Pirbright in November. Does anyone know the likely start / end times as I need to book flights and various other things.

I've tried ringing the barracks multiple times but only get answering machines.

Daniel,

Aim to arrive at around 0930, this gives you a chance to book in, have a brew and use the toilets, the parade starts at 1045 with the troops entering the square at 1100, the pass off goes on until around 1230 depending on the number of troops passing off. After that there is the usual chats with platoon staff and a meal, normally familes leave at around 1400.

If you need anything else info wise let me know.

Brilliant. Thanks, Josh. We have to fly in for the occasion and, for certain reasons, I need to be realistic about rushing to / from the airport. The timings mean flying in the night before but heading home same day - which is very useful. Thanks again.

This is terrible news.

Army recruit dies during training at Pirbright

Number one son is there at the moment also undertaking basic training. I'm due to fly over next week to see him / bring him home for the mid-training long weekend. Suffice to say my wife is having absolute kittens right now. I can only assume that there was either an accident or she had some kind of undiagnosed, underlying medical condition. But that is little comfort to anyone involved!

Without knowing the details, it's quite concerning. It doesn't say exactly which stage she was at but if it was just a one mile run, does that mean she could even have been on her initial selection? It's very sad news though.

Tragic indeed, very very unfortunate, i must say my first thought was underlying condition that wasnt picked up on the entry medicals.

Training both initial PH1/2 and in Unit is all so carefully done, so much red tape, so many precautions, risk assessments for risk assessments, so much safety, the army has to cover its back so carefully these days, i'd be surprised if it was anything untoward, just a very unfortunate situation, thoughts really do go out to the family though:(.

Probably mile and a half PFA, I dont remember at any point in training doing anything under a mile and a half, even during initial look at life and selection phases.

Had a few army units down in my place of work recently as a bit of a show/recruitment drive. I've got my career in a good position which was always my focus before thinking TA/AR.

Local weekender units;

7 Rifles
73 Intel
Royal Marines, RMR Henley.

Few others but I don’t have the skills they want; Geographical units within the Royal Eng's for example.

Going to check out 73 training tonight.
I’m 28 and very few people around 30 years old get their lid according to the RM forum's, so that might be a lot of training for nothing. Realistically, it's either 73 or 7.
