**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

The calculator is a bit crap, it wont let me input the final year, 89-95 it just falls over.

Do not think their is any point in looking at it yet really, think its 1/49th each of your salary, not massive for a lance jack.

Yeap, the Calculator has been redone so it's only for those currently serving. For an ex-military you have to use the JPAC info posted previously or by filling in this form (if you have a pension but aren't yet being paid it) and posting it to JPAC - https://assets.publishing.service.g.../attachment_data/file/968323/AFPS_Form_14.pdf

I did a CTP approx 6 years ago, but an offer of promotion come through so i signed back on; my experience was not the best.

Useful: CV template and review and access to job hunting site and alerts.

Rubbish: rank and trade focused. Because of my trade the only thing they thought i could do was security work and we are talking site guarding and retail security. Also junior ranks were recommended NMW type jobs whereas the officers were recommended managerial type roles - very blinkered and I left scathing feedback.

One big plus was that there was no accommodation available, so i was accommodated at a caravan park on the A1 nr Grantham. I had a wooden lodge with a hot tub for the week - it was awesome!

All that being said, i've had a couple of mates go through the resettlement process more recently and they say they found it a more positive experience. Get on Linkedin and a lot of people actually have their CVs attached to their profile (bad drills). Grab a few CVs of the area you are interested in moving into and build your own CV - you can then take it to the CTP for review - don't waste time there building one from scratch.

How long you done? What area are you thinking of moving into? Happy to add you to my Linkedin network if you want.

It was the same back at the end of '14 and I don't know anyone whose left within say the last 2-3 years to see if it's improved since then.

Thats good advice, I also think it's a good idea to create a single generic "big" CV with everything on it but only to use as a base-template to create other different "smaller" CV's tailored towards different roles you want or around different skills you have. That way rather than having just one "big" CV that you send to every different type of Job you apply for (a pain for HR to go through to sort wheat/chaff) you can send a "smaller" more focused CV (which HR like) and not have to worry about writing one from scratch each time.

I'm looking at the either IT courses (Network/Security+) or H&S (IOSH/ Nebosh) courses. I'm having FMB in a few months for breathing issues so something less labour intensive is needed. I've already done the L4 part of the OU Computing Course and a JavaScript for webmasters course.

The CV tips are good, and it's a shame that it was rank focused, hopefully it may have changed. I've done 7, coming up 8 years so will have access to the higher level ELC shortly.

I'm lead on a Cyber Protection Team, so have the those courses you mentioned. Do you want to go down the architecture, building, support, audit (ISO27001LA) Technical (CISSP) Incident Response, Manager (CISM) etc etc. I'm not overly technical (i have my geeks for that) but again, i have a network of cyber specialists on my linkedin - HMU (lol) if you want adding - always happy to help a fellow Service person - Soldier, Sailor or AVIATOR (loooool).

Let's be fair, there's barely anyone who actually sails the ship and the majority of the army don't soldier either, so it's all a crock :p

I work alongside RAF aircraft technicians daily and from chatting to them it seems like everyone is embarrassed by the combination of this new gender neutral term and the new "thunderbirds" style uniform that was being bandied about. I understand that there's a modern desire to move away from Airman/Airwoman but I'm not sure Aviator is the best choice currently, however in a decade or two I'm guessing it'll just be the norm and no-one will bat an eye-lid at it.

I think the architecture, building and auditing route aligns well with what I have covered so far and the direction I have seen myself head in. Thanks for posting the ISO, I'll look towards what courses and roles cover that, it's a good starting point!
I'll need to get a LinkedIn profile set up, I don't have any social media presence.
To be honest I'm looking at taking some time out after to get myself together (6 months - a year), have a bit of breathing space and get the level of medication I depend upon down. Just get back to my normal self but also use it to complete further study.

I'm quite sure we are now 'Craftspersons' rather than Craftsmen in the REME.

Just as a heads up, if anyone is considering putting in an AFCS claim the current time line is around a year for a case to be looked at. Vets UK are absolutely disgraceful.
I put a claim in for a snapped Achilles in about 2008. Took about 6 months back then and the scheme was pretty new at the time. I'll bet a lot more people know about it nowadays, so not surprised it takes a bit longer. Worth doing though. Think I got £10k :)

We aren't a patch on Norway. Army service there is the way it should be.

Think of British armed forces and you think of it being a last stop saloon for people with nothing else to do and nowhere else to go.
Rampant racism, sexism and multiple projects over budget and under or not performing.

 Yeah mate... this aint the 80's. Just not true nowadays. I'd be lying if I said it flat out didnt happen. however, just like within any slice of society you will find some bad eggs.
My ongoing experience within the military is very much different to how you think of it, and I get the luxury to have viewed it in multiple branches and levels.
