Can anyone answer a question about the SA80-A2 for me please ?

Is the version being used in Afghanistan with the modified foregrip being introduced across the whole range and as standard issue to all infantry etc or is it just a modification for that region and conflict ?

Pretty sure it's just for Afg. Someone might correct me.

If you didn't know there is a new system out now too. Although this won't be available for everyone. Looks a really nice bit of kit:

It's one of the current UORs (Urgent Operational Requirments) for Afhgan along with the ACOG sights and many other bits & bobs for both ground and air assets. As to it eventually equipping all frontline troops, maybe, in time. But that all depends on the MoD bean counters.

Thanks for the answers folks.

I am liking the sharpshooter. It re-iterates that the 7.62mm round is still highly regarded and almost guaranteed to drop your target with one shot unlike the 5.56mm.

I am looking to put a few in a target at 300m this weekend at Catterick.

Also, what are the benefits of the ACOG over the SUSAT ?

pretty much this, but as units cycle through afghan some of the rifles filter back through with the equiped foregrips, had them out on the ranges couple of months back, pretty good kit i would say.

to lemonkettaz, if you want any advice on going commando route, gimme a shout, i'm currently going through my commando training at the moment as a Gnr.
its tough but its definitly the way forward! especially if going the trade route.

I was just taking to some commandos, they said if you are fit enough then anyone can do it. It's just 99.9% of people think they can't! You need to be mentally strong enough for it and just keep going.

i'm a gunner in the royal artillery, hopefully when i get to my battery i want to be on the FST's.
all arms is 9 weeks long.
i cant say for sure when in the other regt's you can volunteer for specialist units but we got the choice in phase 1.
i'm currently on my 2nd beatup course, came off due to injury.
hopefully on the april course. nothing on the course is new to me though, done it all before, except the 30 miler.
anyone is capable of it, all it takes is a reasonable level of fitness and a bit of mental robustness.

Honestly mate, they let though some right useless *****. On my course I would say I'd be happy to let though around maybe 4 people out of 16, and I would say we have a good course. And considering there are 14 courses that go though a year, that's a lot of people who are there and shouldn't be.

It's very much an attitude of revise for exam, pass exam, then move onto the next one. In no time what so ever people loose their knowlage. At the moment we've just finished doing a Windows Server & exchange module, been on it for quite some time, and for the exam yesterday, which was exchanged based, people we're still ******* up their server install and configurations, so god knows what it'll be like when at their unit etc.

I think it's the case of the army had a number of rolls to fill, so people were put into jobs that didn't really suite them. They're not interested in their subject out side the classroom, so they don't suite the IS roll.

Yeah, there is plenty of opportunity to take up sports if you wish. Our regiment is massively into it's boxing, and our squadron in particular takes a massive roll in it. Same for Football, Rugby, loads of sports.

And yeah, 90% classroom for my course, some workshop, some field. All depends on what trades you go for though I guess.

Feel free to ask any questions though mate.

Sounds a lot like this place. Don't get me wrong we have some very very clever hard working people here. But we have people who have some very poor attitudes towards the job, people who manage to get away with anything.

College was easier, and people here get away with more than I would have at college. Its all good though and wouldn't swap it. The cash we get for the training they provide is pretty good.

Quick question. If you have some scars on each forearm that are evidently self-harm, are you disqualified from joining the RAF? I have been told that the only exclusion is a history of more than one 'episode' of self harm; is this true? What if the self-harm episode was not documented in any medical notes, and at the time you were prescribed drugs for another medical condition (that is not disqualified) where the side effects are depression? Does anyone have any ideas (please only people with serious responses)?

Is there somewhere online you can take an army aptitude test (BARB?)? Something that give you an idea of which career, if any, you'd be suitable for.

Just wondering , by the time i finish uni i will be 25... now for a pilot in the RAF it says from ages 17.5-25 does that mean at 25 i will be able to apply or does it mean after you have passed all your training etc you have to be 25?

It's just rough from what I've seen, ask the AFCO.

Go down to the careers office, and do a BARB, then you'll get a list of what jobs you can apply for, and find out more ones you feel you could be suited for. It's not like you're in any sort of contract at that point :).

Quick question about tattoos, I've been thinking about joining the army for the best part of 5 years, preference being Comms or REME armourer, turning 20 and having no real career ahead of me or any idea what I even would want to do has got me thinking about it again, however I've also been thinking of getting a small tattoo on my left forearm about 3 inches from the start of my hand, not very big and just something simple.

I know the obvious answer would be just don't get it but just wondering what the armies views of tattoos on the forearms these days?

On a side note, anyone know what the recruitment is like for those two?

Rule of thumb for navy is you're not aloud anything thats visible in your no1s, assume its similar for army, so aslong as its not visible with long sleeves it should be ok.
