**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Attitude, preperation for any interviews, leadership qualitys, ability to gel into a team.
Medical, aptitude to complete the training to required standard and in time frame.

The usual kind of stuff.
You're second guessing yourself already which isnt a good sign for someone wanting a commision with the aim of flying some very expensive kit.

And someone mentioned above a certain trade is a lot more dull than it sounds - they all are, its the armed forces, practice makes perfect, its none stop training rinse repeat.
Being a pilot isnt as glam as its made out, lots of red tape and training sorties throughout career.

Thanks Peetee, much appreciated.

As odd as it sounds this aspect really appeals to me. It's how I've always becomes good at everything I've ever succeeded in. I've been both a sponsored skateboarder and sponsored snowboarder, both times were through hammering home maneuvers for days on end until they were second nature.

All that's left now is for me to get as good as I can physically be, then see what happens on the day(s).

:)

'Hammering' them? For days on end? We're on about a career here, its for the rest of your life.

Why did you stop doing either, you cant just stop being a forces pilot.
Keep up with the application anyway, you might find it tedious but after all it may end up being what you love doing.. eventually.. when there actually becomes a worthwhile point to it.

Unfortunately my intended career is not to be. Went to an optician today and apparently my eyes have the slightest myopia (short sightedness). Absolutely miniscule, barely detectable and certainly not enough to warrant glasses. The guy said I was right on the margin.

However the RAF don't allow any short sightedness : ((((((((((((

Try the Army Air Corps they may have lower limits on eye sight.

I got my RAF application rejected also due to my eyesight, even though I was assured at every step that it wasn't going to be a set back.

So I've told them to sod off and am applying for Army Intelligence now :p. I'm going through the TA to do my soldier and officer training, which will give me a much better shot at passing Mainboard. Passed my assessment last week, sent off my enlistment forms. Lets see what happens.

Good luck in the long wait!

It's getting tough this waiting game now, passed ADSC back in October and there is still no news of a phase 1 start date yet...

It's easily going to be over a year from start of the application to starting basic

Got my date finally last week. Here's all my dates and details over my long long application :

Application - 6th feb '09
BARB : 17th feb : passed - 83
Medical : passed
Interview 3 : passed 14th May
ADSC : 9th July B grade
Start Training 16th May 2010

Holy..

My recruiter said that he hopes he will get RE dates in the next month, so hopefully before end of March I'll know when i will be starting.

I'm thinking back end of summer for me

Bet you are over the moon?

Well I was expecting April but yeh happy to finally get a date.

Not over the moon, got worries about if my fitness will be up to scratch by the time I go in and also really bored at the moment of playing games and going out so can't wait to get in and do something different.

Just got a call from my recruiter today, the potential waiting for my 1st choice trade is back end of 2011.

There are 4 spaces this year and 6 spaces next year.

So it was advised to goto my 2nd trade choice which is Surveyor, he will let me know the waiting time for that in the next month or so...

It could be the case of moving down my choices til there is one that I will get on this year.

Recruitment must be choc a bloc!!! I started this application last June as well

Mate, it's not even recruiting that's choc a bloc, the entire army is over manned, people already in who can't meet standards are being removed, where as before, they'd be left alone, or reallocated or something.

Good luck with your application though, have you thought about any other trades that may get you in earlier? Or are you only really wanting to do your first choice?

Well my choices are:

1.Design Engineer (draughtsman, surveyor, construction materials, elec&mech draughtsman)
2.Geo Tech
3. REME Avionics/Electronics

Seen as my 1st choice is split into 4, I can basically choose any of the four as my 1st choice, so seen as draughtsman is out, i've moved onto to surveyor to see if I can get in sooner.

I can't even say can I go infantry, as that is a massive waiting list now... plus I'd have to do selection again i would have thought for infantry/para.

My plan is to go the commando engineer route eventually, or at least have a crack at it seen as it's supposed to be tough.

I'd rather have a construction based trade than any other, looks like so does everyone else :)

I don't mind waiting a year, it's the fact i literally can't afford to wait that long

Yeah, the waiting list for pretty much every trade is huge now. Took me slightly longer than 3 years to get back in, although that was down to incompetence than being full lol, but luckily got in just before the waiting lists started to get ridiculous. People applying for combat med tech had almost a 18 month wait.

Hopefully you'll get a place sooner than you think, always find people get so far in the application then decide not to finish it, so maybe you'll get lucky with getting someone else's slot.

As for selection for infantry/paras, you could possibly have to do it again, could depend on what you scored first time around, as they're slightly higher, although RE have quite a high standard anyway.

Commando route would be a good route, give you something to aim for. I've got a lot of plans for when I get out of my phase 2 training, trying to get the ball rolling now for them, just hope they come though, just may take a few years, but doing the AACC is one of them, just to get my green beret, at least for a bit ;) lol.
