Yes but if Hamilton can stay in touch then he stands to be on fresher rubber towards the end.

No, it's a 5 second penalty, when he pits for tires he stays still for an extra 5 seconds, that's all.

There is no need, you can undercut to get ahead in track position, there is precisely no reason to do so right now. He could maybe have gained up to 2 seconds if he pitted first, he gains nothing pitting second, he's got to think alternative strategies, having 2-3 laps less on the hard tire and less time on the medium at the end when he'll really go at Rosberg.
