If Mercedes are smart, they'll give Hamilton a new engine for Monza (if it's actually required to help avoid possible blowouts). They'll chew everything alive on the straights and it should be a comfortable 2nd at worst. Heck, if Rosberg has a mare he could even still win it.

SC start and the VSC totally ruined it, pit-stops while we have VSC needs a rethink. Gives an unfair advantage.

Pit stops under the normal safety car also give an unfair advantage, should that be stopped as well? The probability and risk of a safety car is one of the things that the team will factor into their strategies, sometimes they get it right and sometimes not (and occasionally they will trigger a safety car deliberately to allow the other driver to win).

You know the safety car is out too long when everyone pits for inters. Happens all the time. They're big boys with tyres specifically made for standing water. Let them race earlier.

The full wets aren't really designed for full wet conditions these days, as Pirelli know that the race will start under a safety car and so the tyres are designed accordingly.

Got a link for that as I've never heard anyone say it before or just your guess?

Everyone for years, drivers, commentators etc.
They even talked about it this race.

And I mentioned it earlier in this thread.

It doesn't matter how good the tyres are they still won't race., many rules would need changing. IMO the biggest three being

Ride height,
Parc ferme rules
Modern aero - and that's the biggest issue. Seems to be no want to sort this out, which would also help wheel to wheel racing. But modern aero causes far to much spray and drivers simply can't see.

So they really need to look at race date and times to minimise chance of rain. Or more unlikely change a whole host of rules.

Be interested if anyone has any stats, but wet races seem to be more often these days.

I agree might aswell just do away with the wets, if I was racing in the middle of the pack I'd considering trying to go out on inters behind the safety car to try and make it to slicks :D

Saw plenty of running on the full wets yesterday at the test. They seem perfectly capable in conditions pretty much exactly like the start of the race in Sunday.

The GP2 drove me and my GF out of the grandstands. Just loud and uncomfortable and unpleasant.

Really? I'd suggest some ear defenders of sorts. Part of the fun of Motorsport is the sound, it adds to the drama of it all. What would you have done in the V12 era? I'd think you'd wear ear defenders before being drove out of the grandstand..

The current F1 cars have nothing exciting about their sound IMO. This was my first race since V6 turbo and I was simply disappointed, especially when the Porsches and GP2 sound so fantastic.

I used to wear ear plugs when watching the V12/10/8s - they certainly are loud and hearing them from miles away from the circuit was cool but after some years they are annoying. Its just "loud" rather than anything else, with the V6 you don't need ear protection and can hear the other bits of the car working, the crowd, actually not have to shout quite as much to the person next to you etc.

Anyone that hasn't heard one of the old engines in person needs to but its just irritating now :p

Or if you drank too heavily the night before. The V8's got tedious really quickly. :p

However i'll always remember hearing them for the first time from the mini bus we were in a good mile from the circuit and the change in tone as 20 of them revved up to start the race. After that i can take it or leave it. :D

Skeeter, are spectators only allowed between club and abbey on the circuit?

Yeah. Shame really as much more of the track used to be open.

The fact you now have to go 'inside' the circuit to get to some of it means its now a lot easier for them to close sections of the track off.

I too remember being however far from the circuit and really hearing the cars. Built the excitement. You can barely hear the current cars when they're a corner away lol.

I haven't heard the new ones yet but I'm lead to believe its a completely different noise that's more detailed with pops, whoosh's, engine tone etc. As well as being able to hear the tyres now too. I'm looking forward to it.

The new sound is very directional. When the cars are coming towards you they have to be almost ontop of you to hear them. Yet when they are going away from you they can be heard for quite a distance. Its like the noise is being fired directly out the rear of the car, rather than sent out in all directions equally like the NAs were.

Its exactly this. They are not as loud (although still pretty loud!) but what they lose in that they gain in complexity.

We sat at the end of the main straight yesterday for a bit and hearing the cars down the pit lane, stop, rev, then do a practice start was full of all sorts of funky noises. Crackles, pops, bangs, whoosesh and hisses, turbines spinning when off throttle, barks, and then the higher pitched roar when they floored it.

Red Bull were also running some odd maps yesterday that caused a backfire sounding noise when they lifted off that sounded like a shotgun going off! Baaaarp, BANG, crackle, whoosh, brrrrrrrr, BANG!

You can also tell a Honda from a Haas from a Mercedes though noise alone, which you could never do with the NAs.
