but I'd much rather qualifying just affect the main race
This is something for them to consider - Qualifying still sets the position for the main race on Sunday, no matter what the result of the sprint.

I think most people agree that the current three part qualifying is a success but who remembers the mess it was when it was first tried? They learned from that and made changes pretty quickly.

Also, I think this new sprint format gives teams some insight in to race pace of others for the main event as well as tyre performance over a longer distance and following in the dirty air.

I'm interested to see if the need to stay of the kerbs for Max was a problem forming or just precautionary. Once that instruction came in, Lewis closed right up and probably could have got past him in a couple of laps.
I'm pretty sure they had such a large gap that they just told him to back off, save the engine and not risk a random Pirelli blow out. Willing to bet if Hamilton got close to getting DRS, Max would just step on the gas and bang out another 3s gap.

If qualifying sets the race order then what would the sprint be there for. Would just be there to wear down engines and let us know race pace and how it would go on Sunday.

I was open to trying this sprint race but after experiencing it I am very much against it. I'm heading to Silverstone tomorrow and already know the pace of Max. If drivers weren't in parc ferme after the sprint then that could be alright, but right now I'm not looking forward to tomorrow as I feel like I've already watched the race.

What I did think was utter garbage was JB interviewing the drivers during that celebration lap. Let them have their few minutes, let them wave to the crowd and wait until it's over to interview them.

It's making me not want to watch the race now
Why? Genuinely curious!
I am fascinated to see what Merc do. They will have been crunching numbers all day/night looking at strategy, they have 2 cars up there to play with, and it's going to be HOT. Tyre Deg will be high especially under full weight, and it's a recipe for upsets/failures and we have some cars out of position for midfield escapades.

I will have it recorded and watch the full live recording in the evening. I can't wait!!

Mandatory 3 or even 4 pit stops in the main race would encourage team/drivers to drive more on the limit.

But at some point, driving at full tilt for more of the races would then perhaps cause issues with fuel tank capacity?

The simple answer is to bring back refuelling and they won't need to mandate pit stops, we'll have more drivers on a diverse range of fuel and tyre strategies making for a much more interesting race and engineers will have a more difficult time calculating the best strategy at any given time and given that drivers would be going full tilt rather than in fuel/tyre saving/driving to deltas it becomes more about driver ability rather than some engineers calculations.

I really don't like the modern aspect of F1 where with 40 laps of a race to go Mercedes pit Hamilton and tell him that he'll catch Verstappen with 2-3 laps to go (which he does), F1 needs to be more unpredictable and more about what happens on the track and for that you need more variables that make it harder for the engineers to predict/plan everything.

Because it's going to be the same exact result, max will sale off into the distance and set the pace, Lewis will eat through his tyres trying to catch him and bottas will do something lackluster. I'm a massive fan of F1, but this year hasn't clicked for me for some reason

Im happy Max is winning, the worse thing would be Lewis winning another championship easily

It's not the fact who's winning for me, it's the fact there is no challenge. Same for Lewis last year, it just becomes a bit meh

So don't.

What if that is what everyone follows that advice and doesn't watch? Without an audience F1 is nothing.

I did find the sprint entertaining; two grid starts do give a driver who starts well a great opportunity to make up places. On the on the other hand, I too feel like I know how the race will now turn out and may only really need to watch the start to see if that will change anything.

I didn't mind what Alonso was doing. So long as the car behind is far enough back then there is nothing dangerous. He stopped when cars got close, and while he was warned for moving under braking I can't say I can recall seeing any.

No holds barred racing. Is it actually any better?
It's better than an hour more practice, especially for those at the track.

Certainly not something I want for every race, but three or four across a season would be OK. Any more and you're just further saturating an already over-saturated year.

You could almost get it down to a two day event. Saturday morning FP1, Saturday afternoon qualifying. Sunday morning sprint race and Sunday afternoon the grand prix. Sunday might be a bit hard on the driver's necks on quick tracks like Silverstone, but if next season's cars are slower then that's less of an issue.

That was brilliant!
We got to see a normal qually session on Friday and some fantastic racing on a Sat, before the full fat race tomorrow!
What is there not to like?
I really do not get what you could not have liked about that sprint race?!
I'm with you here. The sprint race was more interesting to watch than a practise session. More actual wheel to wheel racing over a weekend can only be a good thing.

I think with some tweaking it could be better. I do agree that Friday qualy setting the starting positions for the sprint, that then sets starting position for the race isn't the best solution. Although arguably a lot of these problems are perhaps somewhat an issue due to Silverstone and the cars. I hope we get to see it tested at a circuit with easy overtaking, or where the sprint race is in the wet.
If they want more excitement, have friday qualifying set the grid for the main race and do a reverse grid for the sprint race!

No. Refuelling stops on track passes. Why take the chance of passing someone on track when you know they’ll be pitting in the next lap or two? Why bother trying to pass when you can pit early, fuel longer and get track position when your opponent pits? People keep saying bring back refuelling. It’s proven in the past to be a disaster for on track passing.
