Wait, so they qualify for the ‘sprint race’? Just sounds gimmicky. Shame they’re using Silverstone to trial it. It does seem like F1 is being more and more tailored for an audience that isn’t me.

Silverstone is a perfect place to try it as supposedly they can overtake here.

Too bad they haven't done two races here this year given all the cancellations.

I see no harm in changing things up a little bit every now and then. Qualifying used to be an hour of open track and nothing happening for 20 minutes!

I feel like they came up with sprint races properly with a reverse grid or similar and then the teams chipped in saying they don't want that but becasue they told the world we're having sprint races this is what we're getting instead, an extra race for no reason where smaller teams won't push because the risk of failures and breakages isn't worth the extra grid position on Sunday.

The big teams also wouldn't want reverse grid sprint races, as coming through from the back is riskier and any damage etc potentially affects Sunday (+Cost cap)

Hang on? So the pole position award goes to the winner of the sprint race? So this is the old friday pre-qualifying then....

Well, except we don't have the numbers of teams and driver to cull the field down to 26 now.

That is very poor by Kimi. Gio is killing him on qualifying. It would be interesting to see what the Alfa could with someone who is good at qualifying and in the race. As the moment Gio qualifies well but goes backwards. Kimi qualifies poorly but tends to go forwards.

Not feeling this at all.

So, we have a practice session, then qualifying that really isn't, then another free practice session with the cars in parc ferme conditions , then a 17 lap race that is the actual qualifying with the start positions sorted by the non-qualifying, and finally then the proper race.

So other than the first hour on friday the cars are parc ferme... So one oops with a new part that you have no spares of, and you're booted to the back of the grid as the car isn't identical.
