Why, plenty countries do just fine with no monarchy.
It is so archaic, thats what my problem with it is. Archaic, and not relevent to the modern world.
Look back over our last 5 or 6 PM's, would you really want to have them as head of state?
In which case we sit back and enjoy the profit? Or do you propose a setup whereby the Royal's property is stolen from them as part of removing them from power?
Yeah you're right. Those elected representatives have the best interests of the country at heart and haven't pretty much **** us over the last 13 years.

If the UK is going to retain the monarchy (which it seems most people favour), then it should be for well thought out reasons, not for some imagined prestige or for what we think the tourists want. That's my view.
I didn't say she would do anything about them, (technically capable tho she may be), I was merely pointing out that the elected system is also terrible what with us being in the worst financial crisis ever, highest unemployment and fighting an unnecessary war.
What system would you adopt?
So, for those who are anti-monarchy, what would you propose replacing it with? Make the case for that as you are arguing against the status quo.
Exactly what we have, with that family no longer being royal.
Quite simple.
As I said, its not like they have much political day to day experience or involvement of running the country or what have you. Strip them out, leave them their heraldry and money.
I am sure tourists will still come to visit them.

So you want the Prime Minister to be head of state as well as head of the government? Is he going to pick up the slack on all the royal engagements?
Are you also going to give them back all of the Crown Estates which currently pays in to the treasury?
And all the diplomatic engagements? Do we knock them on the head too?
So you want to steal their possessions and money and kick them out??
Then give the ~ 1000 diplomatic engagements they have every year to Miliband (a great representative of the country btw, has a real presence!) to do on top of his own workload.

The Queen has a done a fantastic job of head of state for almost her entire life. I dont think people give her enough credit.
I am all for the Monarchy. Yes I know times change, but this nation has had a monarchy for thousands of years. It would be wrong to remove it now. I think Charles will make an excellent king.
