Broken my Wrist

Once the op has happened make sure you make the surgeon aware of any difficulties or pains you do have and make sure you properly do your physio/rehab.

I put my car through a granite wall, the arm snapped in 4 places and the wrist/hand bones were broken as well. My arm was in the shape of a chicane... looked horrible.

Anyway, after that got "fixed" the cast came off... then 3 weeks later the tendon in my thumb snapped. Seems one of the screws attaching the plate to my arm and gone through the other side and into where my thumb tendon was. It wore away until it broke... I turned the ignition on my car and a sharp pain came through and then my hand was locked around the steering wheel. Another op, tendon graft, cast; my arm muscle had wasted away. Being out of action for 4 months odd starts to be a problem as your muscles forget what to do and then also train your new tendon to do what you want it to do... that's if you want to get full movement back.

The Long and the short of it is, go for your check ups, take it easy on the arm and do your physio/rehab!

I'm a year and 9 days from my crash and only starting to get up to proper strength in the last 2 months. Saying that, thats mostly down to the double bubble damage.

A friend of mine broke his wrist some years back. He had it re-broke and had pins inserted. He's fine now except for a pretty angry scar next to his wrist and his penis has fallen off.

Oh hell I think it may be the Scaphoid aswell :(

I did my Scaphoid a few years back. It wouldn't heal on its own so after a few months in a cast I had to have a surgical pin put in to fix it in place, then another few months in a cast. Enjoy! :p :D

If you get put in a cast and stays hot buy some knitting needles because the urge to itch will drive you crazy! I broke my wrist when I was about ~14 and I still remember hopping around when I couldn't scratch the itch - I'm convinced it's worse than water boarding! :D

How did you not know?

I take it wrist looked like this?

;)

With the surgical pin - Does that stay in for life? Did you have to be put completely out while they did the surgery? I play the drums - How much will this effect me?

Also - What was the situation with work?

Lol! :p It works pretty much perfectly it just hurts when I put it into that position. But the last couple of weeks it's been getting worse and it's starting to get difficult to move at all  :(

TBH fair Marky i have heard of people breaking a toe before and not knowing for a few weeks. But i thought we used toes to balance lol

I've heard people break there toes a few times in a lifetime but you never really notice :p *

* Might be a myth - Not sure :p

Ouch, hope they don't have to re-break it to put it back into position.

As for the toe thing - don't we break our little toe about a dozen times a year (give or take)?

AFAIK, yes it says in (mines still in there). Yea it was done under a general anesthetic. Well my wrist is pretty much 100% normal now, didn't even require any PT after I had the cast off either just did the little exercises they give you.

I was working as a shelf stacker at the time, I couldn't do any heavy lifting with the cast on.

I didn't notice for the first day or so either, I could still move it.. just not a lot! :D

Oh and showering is a real hassle :D.

(All that is just personal experience, might differ for you, obviously discuss it with the doctor for better information:))

Hmm that's probably just about what I heard :p

Thanks for sharing your experience :D
I've spent a couple of hours browsing the internet and scaring the hell out of myself :p

It sounds like I'll have to have an operation to have a pin put in and then have a cast for 8 - 12 weeks! :(

Lol where have you been :p I've seen that in at least three other threads :p

I demand the links of these threads

I don't come on much atm, too busy with gym/footy and spending time with people before i go down south!

9 months with a broken wrist... how? :p

Probably not that bad, everyone assumes a broken bone is agony but depending on how you did it and where the bone is sitting it can just be a mild annoyance. I broke the end of my fibula snowboarding a few years ago, didn't realise at the time, sure my wrist hurt a bit but not enough to be overly concerned about. I finally found out a couple of years later when I had an xray to try and see why I was getting pins and needles and numbness down the side of my hand. Turns out a piece of bone that had broken off stayed detached and moved around until it was pressing on some nerves.

I also broke both bones in my lower leg and the talus in my ankle in a climbing accident, at the hospital I could still put some weight on it and hobble around which made them think I hadn't broken anything until they xrayed it, needed screwing back together in a couple of places too.

tl,dr: Just because it's broken doesn't mean it hurts a lot.
