Brought vs bought

A lot of people around here say 'axe' and 'axed' instead of 'ask' and 'asked'. Absolutely boils my ****.

One of the biggest butchers of the English language was Shakespeare, now read and examined in English classes the world over.

Spelling/grammar Nazis be damned

Just think of present and past tense to evaluate which to use; brought or bought.
I.e. I will bring it over here; I brought it over here.
I will buy it; I bought it.

Handy reference, with swearing redacted. :)

Bought: I bought a cake from a shop.
Brought: He brought a gift to the party, he brung, he is bringing.

I really hope "brung" is actually a word. It sounds silly to me.

won vs beat.

Having a conversation about a football result.

"We won them".

No, we beat them. If we had won them, then we would be taking them home as a prize :)

I agree with everyfink in this thread.

Bought/brought and "you was..." are the worst examples of idiocy in our spoken language. People who say chill out, it doesn't matter have never heard themselves. It does matter, because anything of importance that comes out of your mouth after is ignored.

Most people have either spoken or written words they just habitually stumble over, regardless of how aware of it they are or how well educated they have been. Plenty of people here with Masters and Doctorates still make mistakes, or repeated typos (most commonly teh instead of the).
It's called being human.

If it still upsets anyone, I'll pu thrugh there leterbocks and that'll be the end of it!

Some people are just too thick, or too lazy, to get it right. It can often be jarring when reading something which has such errors, but what's worse are the spackers who correct what people say rather than engaging with what they obviously mean.

And you managed to insult both sides of the discussion. Bravo.

I do that to tease my wife!

Depends on the person, really. Often we both know what they meant, so it not only shows that I was listening but that I care that they don't make mistakes like this in front of someone else.

Sometimes I will do it as an insult, but they'll have generally earned it anyway and their spoken/written words are the least of their sins! :D
