BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Got my BT FTTP installed yesterday after getting a cancellation appointment. The engineer was someone I served with years ago so probably spent more time talking than fitting! Only took a couple of hours and now getting 508Mb down and 73Mb up. ONT fitted to wall behind TV which is where my modem was, plugged into my ER-X, changed username and up and running within about 5 minutes.

That's really cool :D enjoy. I was explaining to my Mrs just now how the 6.5gb game update I was waiting 40 minutes to download would take 2 minutes flat when we move house and get FTTP. I really can't wait!

That is pretty much the only reason I've upgraded. I got good downloads of 60Mb on FTTC which gives us all we need, but even going to 150Mb down is gonna make the update process more palatable for gaming.

How tough is the grey box they place on your outside wall? I’m dreading the kids being on holiday next week and one of them kicking a football at it. :(

Congrats. I've had mine for two weeks now. Can't say I notice any difference with general web browsing. Mega improvements are with Steam and PlayStation Network. Only Xbox is really flaky, hovering about 300Mbps on average.

I wonder if you’re hitting a write limit on the Xbox storage? What storage does it have?

The 512GB internal SSD on Xbox Series S but the network speed number is up and down like a yo-yo on the console itself, I don't really trust it. It still downloads quick enough in the end and that's all that matters. It just makes me wonder what speed it would run at if I had picked 900Mbits.

Yeah, I think once you hit 30Mb for web browsing there is marginal improvement except video/Youtube/Vimeo and so on. Though downloading 70GB games in 15 minutes is nice compared to 3 hours 30 minutes that I used to encounter with FTTC. As I'm only on the 500MB package.

Try the “magic” link https://www.bt.com/campaign/full-fibre-240 . My address shows a discount on here but not on the general deals page.

I’ve been on Sky FTTP for a year now and it’s been fine, only issue was some sort of DNS outage a few months back but other than it it’s fine.

I'm due to get install on Friday. I went for fibre 100. The deal on this link was better than what they offered.

Jumped on chat and gently suggested they should give me this offer as I had been told my offer was better than new customer deals (as advertised).

They have switched me and I just need to make a call to a direct team for them to verbally communicate the deal for legals etc. So will phone tomorrow.

To previous post. Typical. Phone them up, wait for longer than I was told I'd have to wait and get told they would have to cancel my order, which would cancel the engineer to make the change. So to keep everything going, I have to phone up next week instead to get them to make the change.

I've screenshot the offer page for my postcode and have the transcript where the lady said I would be offered the deal.

So so hard.

WiFi in general? Yes. WiFi specifically at your house and with your equipment? Can't say, there's too many variables.

If I take my setup for example then absolutely my WiFi will do the job very nicely. So it can work, but it's very dependant on local setup.

And ugh, powerlines. Yuck.
What WiFi setup do you have?

I've got a few UniFi Access Points around the house, all of which are hard wired. I've tuned the radios (leaving them on auto isn't great) so get WiFi throughout like this in pretty much anywhere in the house.

cool. I had a plan to run ethernet up the wall and through the coving to route it cleaning into the back of the garage. Plan failed. coving is stuff on with mortar.

guy is here now. young lad from BT. Couldn't be more helpful and putting the white box just where I want it in the house routing the cable along the wall garage. top bloke.

All sorted. Whats even better is this new smart hub seems to have better coverage and reaches our back bedroom on the top floor. So no need to buy an AP/mesh.

Getting as advertised (150Mb download, 28Mb up)
