BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

No, you only change the way how the graph connects via the IPv4 details. Edit, insert IPv4 address and done.

In case people aren't aware, if BT have switched you over to Digital Voice you may be eligible for a free wi-fi enabled cordless phone:
http://bt.com/dvequipment

You should get a pop-up asking for your landline number so they can check eligibility, turn off your adblocker if it doesn't appear.

My parents were switched over a few months back but seemingly weren't told, it was only when I was having a dig around on the BT website that I stumbled across it.

Not sure if this offer is still available but sold ours on ebay for a little under £30 the other day, worth getting one for free just to sell on. Wasn't going to sell it as it was a freebie but after their pathetic retention offer and subsequent move to Vodafone, money is money.

The phones are not yours to own you only rent them. So if you ever change your contract for instance they will want the phone returning or charge you for it. All BT devices are now like that. They sent me the Alexa version of the phone by mistake as I didnt take them up on DV in the end and I had to return it or pay £99.99.

Hmmm, they've told me I can keep my router/wifi disks even thought i'm breaking contract, just have to pay my early exit charge (which is paid by the cashback i'm getting for signing up with Vodafone)

EDIT: Just checked, only have it via live chat transcript I can keep the equipment but no different than being told on the phone and I have the saved transcript, we'll see I guess. Still have the router/disks as it only ended today.

Ah well, if they ask for the phone back, i'll consider it lesson learnt and buy another off FB marketplace and return that, there are loads on there locally :)

I think you've been misinformed. I received a letter from BT about the coming price rise (March 31st) and it says you can cancel your contract without any exit charge and even if you have months/year left (because of the price rise) which is standard practice nowadays.

I've had no email about CPI price rises since last March, I guess one is due any time now. However last year's said the following so there is clearly a change of tact this year...

If you want to leave your BT service and you're outside your minimum contract term, which you can see above, you can leave without exit fees. We'll continue to charge you during your notice period, but you won't be charged for any increase in price during that time.

Had assumed this year would be the same, ie: can only leave if outside contract term.

I don't mind, the cashback covers the early exit fee and I'll be paying £29 instead so it's still a £100'ish saving on top before my contract officially ends in June.

Shame their retainment offers were such a joke as I have zero complaints about BT service.

Can't wait until my BT fix ends £40 for 150mb at the minute.
Amazing how one the others started with FTTP the prices for better. With sky £5 less for the same or £5 more for 500mb. Hmmm.

Missed the original post about this, so thanks for the bump. I’ve just ordered one (tho the buggers charged postage to NI).

Ouch, that's poor value. My Sky 500mb is £42 thanks to the friends and family deal. I'm hoping gigabit will drop in price by the time I come to renew.

It is now it wasn't 2 years ago. I think it was half price for 6 months as well so that has to be factored in.
Works out at £35 a month.

Sent you the BT letter via a link in a Trust message. The wording is different.

Thanks, appreciate the link/letter. Just given them a call with regards to this as if I could swerve a cost, I definitely would :)

So, seems as though I would have been due a letter if I hadn't decided to leave, I initiated my move a week or so before it got triggered. My price rise would have been 5.4% in line with CPI due to having a contract start prior to 01/09/2020.

Your price rise is CPI of 5.4% + 3.9% on top which is the price rise for anyone with a contract started after 01/09/2020 and as such, you have the right to leave without penalty.

Again though, thanks for taking the time, seems as though i'm paying the charge :(

My Vodafone 500/68 started yesterday for £29/month (£32/month if not already a customer) - worth checking out.

Thanks! I've just ordered one. We are thinking of leaving bt soon, so it is good we have been able to get the free phone first.

@VersionMonkey - Hi, I wondering if you could help me to interpret these PingPlotter results, captured while streaming a short Stadia session (pinged IP is the same as the stream):

I checked hops 2-4, they are Talktalk (Opal Telecom hops). The 9th hop is the last hop, which appears to have the same amount of packet loss as the 3rd hop.

Is this worth looking at, or am I wasting my time :D

P.S. Sorry, I didn't put it in the other thread, but it's closed.

Yep, an irrelevant and totally normal amount of packet loss. Forget about it, and move on.

Is this worth looking at, or am I wasting my time :D

Not worth looking at. Not that you'll pay any attention to that. We all eagerly await your next packet loss thread.

Firstly, use a 1s interval if doing this sort of testing - 0.1s interval to devices you don't own is unfriendly.

Most backbone routers will be set up to either drop ICMP echos completely (like the 5th hop) or will at the very least have them as a lower priority than UDP or TCP traffic. So given the aggressive configuration, the results seem pretty reasonable.

Same goes for your collectd results in the other thread - with a 0.1s interval it's possible that your ISP's LNS just had something better to do at those times.

Bare in mind that each of these tools will tell you something different about what's going on. Things like the OpenWRT collectd-mod-ping (and the luci stats app, if you have that installed too), a ThinkBroadband monitor and smokeping will give you data over time which, when compared at the times you are experiencing problems, can help narrow down what's going on.

But, if I understood correctly the comments you got back from your ISP it sounds like you are within their parameters for acceptable service. So it could be you are stuck, short of moving house and/or ISP.
