BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Why would you be reluctant to sign up? The absolute worst case scenario is that you get several months of service and then the contract is cancelled if the company has to shut down and you go back to the same connection you have now (this won't happen - someone will buy them out if it gets to that point).

Mainly the possibility of them being bought by a rubbish provider and then being stuck in a contract with them for a year or 2

If the service degrades you go through the process of leaving the contract - you're protected by consumer law before you start adding on the various optional Ofcom scheme enhancements.

You may decide you don't want the risk of that happening but it could happen to any provider at any point.

Hello everyone, Openreach is finally getting to my area with FTTP, the Openreach FTTP page claiming September.

One question about the installation (fingers crossed) can they use the existing copper wire as a pull wire into the house? Or, do they always fit the fibre as a second connection?

The current copper wire connects to the first floor and takes an unknown route to the ground floor master socket.

Indeed, will they leave the copper in place or does the fibre also carry voice?

Thanks

They won't do that, assuming your fibre is coming overhead via telegraph pole they will just run it down the house wall and come in at ground level.

They ran a new line for fibre, which seems to be standard. Left the copper in place and mentioned that it would get retired at some point in the future.

OK, that's a bit of a problem because the front of the house has three rooms, utility with cupboards and a sink facing "front", the entrance hall with a door that covers the entire entrance space i.e. no bricks to drill through and then then kitchen, also with cupboards facing the front.

What will they do?

(yes, the current copper wire comes from a pole)

They can always run the fibre cable outside along the wall of the house and come in at the side or back. You also don't have to have the new fibre ONT where the current copper master socket is, they will put it anywhere you want as long as there's power.

I've got 30m of fibre running around the outside of my house on my install, the openreach guy was quite happy to do the long run to where I wanted the ONT.

OK, will they install the CSP/ONT outside the main house? I have a boiler "cupboard" to the side of the house (its made of brick and is at the back of the car port using the same roof).

This has power for a boiler and freezer.

I think they'll install it wherever you ask, generally. However, bear in mind you have to connect an ethernet cable from your router to the ONT.

Yes, that's the downside of the boiler cupboard, still have to get an ethernet cable inside or I could consider putting a router in there as well, need to test signal strength with a phone setup for hotspot.

They left my old copper line until I later submitted a case to have it removed as we don't need it.

I found you can pretty much get the installation you want if you put in some effort. My old copper line was overhead and I installed flexible conduit through my loft from just below the soffit to a point in the loft and then conduit down into a double socket box in my server cupboard (ex built in wardrobe).

The OR engineers were happy to abandon their normal CSP on the outside wall approach so I have the CSP installed in my loft (with a few handy loops of spare fibre from the pole and to the ONT) and the ONT right next to the brush strip socket box by my server rack. No visible fibre cable in the house or on outside walls other than a few CM from the double brush strip plate to the ONT.

Interesting, I wonder if they will could install the CSP and ONT in my external boiler/freezer cupboard, leaving the challenge of where to route the ethernet and/or position the router.
