BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

They left my old copper line until I later submitted a case to have it removed as we don't need it.

I found you can pretty much get the installation you want if you put in some effort. My old copper line was overhead and I installed flexible conduit through my loft from just below the soffit to a point in the loft and then conduit down into a double socket box in my server cupboard (ex built in wardrobe).

The OR engineers were happy to abandon their normal CSP on the outside wall approach so I have the CSP installed in my loft (with a few handy loops of spare fibre from the pole and to the ONT) and the ONT right next to the brush strip socket box by my server rack. No visible fibre cable in the house or on outside walls other than a few CM from the double brush strip plate to the ONT.
That’s quite lucky. I’m sure other OR engineers will moan about having to access the loft in future…

More calls from BT's complaints department, the saga of their botched disconnection continues.

Really, fantastically useless. 31st May my service ended, and they're still trying to charge me for it, plus various late payment fees, and threatening to cut off my mobile.

Just save yourself the pain (and cost) and absolutely DO NOT use BT.

The loft is boarded where the CSP is located and the whole loft is very well illuminated.

I asked the three OR engineers that did the initial review of the road before fibre was installed and the three OR engineers that pulled the fibre to my home and they all said such an easy install was an engineers dream. When the final engineer turned up for CSP/ONT install and realised all he had to drill was two holes for the ONT screws, pull cables through conduit will pull cords and the splice he was very happy.

If he had brought the ONT case that fits a double back box he wouldn’t have even needed a drill :D

Have you done the CEO complaint route?

Morning folks, I've now handed my notice in with VM and I'm looking to move to Aquiss on their Pure Fibre 1000 package.

Are there any other providers that I should consider before pulling the trigger?

I notice that Aquiss don't provide a modem/router where as Talk Talk full fibre 900 comes with 2 Eeros & £100 cashback via Quidco so they may be a decent option?

Depends if you value properly decent, UK based customer service, static IP (with an option of a /29) etc. They also don't do annual price rises.

TalkTalk are decent from a network perspective, but their support and customer service can be a complete and utter joke.

I’m with Aquiss - I recommend them. 12 month contract too.

Thank you both, I've just placed my order with Aquiss!

Now to find a modem/router, we've been using the original Google WiFi with 3 access points in total (one for each floor) for the past 7 years or so and it's be bulletproof, but Wifi speeds could be faster.

The new(er) Nest WiFi Pro should provide faster WiFi thanks to 6E and the 3 pack looks to be well priced compared to the competition. Any other mesh systems that I should be taking a look at?

Good choice! I moved to Aquiss recently and am happy with the service, especially the customer service.

Just before I pull the trigger on switching to Aquiss I went through every single 900Mb+ ISP to see what's available:

Ruled out anything in red.

The only other decent deal I can see is with TalkTalk. It comes with a £90 Amazon Gift Card, Amazon Eero 6 Mesh System (2 units) and also £75 cashback via Quidco.

It's not too far off the total cost of the Aquiss deal when you factor in cashback (over the same duration), then you have the £90 gift card and free mesh system on top (no idea if this is any good). I'll also have to sort a new router with Aquiss. However, TalkTalk hit you with an annual CPI increase which I'd rather avoid.

Am I mad to consider TalkTalk over Aquiss?

No it’s good value and their back end product is actually good. Their service is lack lustre should anything go wrong.

At the end of the day it’s FTTP, it either works or it doesn’t, it’s not like the old days of copper lines, cross talk and gradual speed drops over time.

I don’t think you’ll be able to sell the router, it’s probably locked to talk talk but if you need to use it, it’s probably fine.

I'm considering moving my FTTP over to TT and dropping the speed. My Virgin Media is semi static, so as a FTTP backup I'm sure TT will be perfectly fine until City Fibre come along. It would be good if I could sell the Eero as I have no use for it.

According to TT small print:

Amazon eeros are included as part of the broadband package are provided with restricted use. This means they can only be used on the TalkTalk network with an eero enabled package. Usage elsewhere risks deactivation.

Additional eeros purchased with a one-off payment are not restricted in use.

I think it might be more helpful to have a column for monthly price over the contract term, otherwise you're comparing 18 months of use with 12. TalkTalk don't offer any IPv6 if that is important to you. Zen, BT and Sky do. Not sure about Onestream.

Good suggestion.

I'm not too fussed about IPv6, it's just an added bonus I guess.

I haven't taken the annual increases into account, but if I did that it would change the TalkTalk price over months 9-18 from £49 to £55 (3.7% + 8.7%) - an extra £54 over the remaining months give or take. Unless my maths is completely off that would make TalkTalk marginally more expensive than Aquiss even with the annual increase, and that's before you even consider the £90 Amazon Gift Card and Eero 6 Mesh System. Then you add on having to buy a router with Aquiss.

TalkTalk surely the winner here?
