BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Has anyone had an install done recently? just wondering what the rough lead time is. My virgin contract is up at the beginning of Sept and don’t want to cancel that and then order fttp only to find out there’s a 5-6 week wait. Thanks
If it's a new install, don't cancel until the new service is in and working.

Thanks Chris, sent a message to Aquiss as well an they advised installs from 1st week of Aug. Back in March they were advising 4-5 weeks so just wanted to check.

Strange. There's a lot of direct buried cables where I live and Openreach have been routinely putting in ducts and cable tube for FTTP installs. I had a bit of a fight with them to get my parents place done, theirs was the first direct buried but since then I've seen hundreds of houses have the same work done.

Which provider is deeming them not economical? It may be that the work required in your neck of the woods is more complex than here I suppose.
BTOR (spoke to the exec complaints dept) and Wildanet (the only altnet down here).

I can only assume there are other metrics at play. Like the expected return on investment, expected uptake, average salary (low down here).

I imagine they've run the numbers, and DIG properties here are less rewarding to them than DIG properties where you are.

But either way, we've been told to expect a (very) long wait before anything happens (up to decade), and potentially that we may end up served by some manner of wireless or satellite network. BTOR were very candid in saying that FTTP is not guaranteed in any timescale. They may choose to just leave some properties un-serviced. There is currently no legal requirement for them to provide any broadband capable network at all (only phone service).

I looked at reviews and had a chat with the MD, so now I'm warming to the idea of going with Aquiss.

Wireless is bad in certain parts of our house so I like the idea of combining a router with an AP or some kind of mesh network. I already have a TP-Link AV1000 which works with OneMesh/EasyMesh or whatever it's called. Thinking of going with the TP-Link AX3000 which seems reasonably priced considering what you get.

Any other recommendations? No particular budget in mind, but I'd like Wi-Fi 6, gigabit ports and the ability to work with mesh or something similar.

TP-Link AX5400 looks good, but not sure the faster CPU is justified over the AX3000 when we have <10 devices. I also don't need USB as I use a NAS for shared storage.

I'm glad you're warming to the Aquiss idea. I did a similar thing but the other way round, read the TalkTalk reviews and placed my order with Aquiss

It's due to be installed in the morning and I went with the Nest Wifi Pro. I'm sure it will be frowned upon here as it's pretty much plug and play, but I've been using the original Google Wifi for 5 or 6 years and it's been flawless, so the Nest Wifi Pro seemed like the logical upgrade for me as I was looking for WiFi 6/6E.

I have the AX5400 on Aquiss, and ended up buying the one with 2.5 GBe. The AX3000 would have been more than enough however the version I bought was on sale for around £100, just a little more than the AX3000 was at the time. I have an old house with thick walls and the router placed relatively centrally in the house gives me no less than 300 Mbps connection to the router. The computers relying on a speedier connection are all hardwired.

Switchover happened today but there was no loss of service from the old provider, thats new. In the past there was a gap of an hour or two with no service till the new one went live but this time there was no interruption to service just swap over routers, interesting.

I've read a lot of bad press in respect of Openreach service previously however I thought I would post my experience following my Openreach FTTP connection going down on Wednesday morning. I called my ISP, Sky, a little after 10am to report the fault, after 30 minutes on the phone running through various diagnostics the phone operator determined that an engineer visit was required.

It was at that point the dread set in as she said 'the earliest appointment slot we have is'.... 'Thursday between 8am-1pm'

Sure enough Openreach arrived a little before 9am, my connection restored a little after 10am.

Around 24 hours from being reported to reconnected is very good service in my humble opinion. Appreciate this could be the exception rather than the norm but on this occasion Openreach performed.

What was the issue you encountered? I'm curious more than anything!

Has anyone ported there BT number over to a separate VOIP ? I'm currently on FTTC and FTTP is just about to go live , from what I've been reading it means you lose your fibre connection as it a full cancellation then you have to start a new contract for FTTP without the phone .

This really shouldn't be taking 30 minutes.
It's Sky... they'll have the sorts of customer that would call them and complain that their internet is down because their can't get Wi-Fi signal 100m from their house while their router is in a lead lined cabinet or more simply when their device has disconnected from Wi-Fi.

It's fair to say their script has all sorts of steps to account for this kind of stuff an enthusiast would respond 'really....?' to.

I haven't done it, but I did kick off the process a couple of years back but canned it when it was confirmed that my FTTP would be cancelled and I'd be charged an early termination fee.

Yes, I went to an Alt.Net so waited until the new FTTP connection was live and then cancelled my FTTC contract. I ported the number to Andrews and Arnold as I was overly interested in an inclusive call package.

I think this topic discusses this in more detail https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/voip-landline-providers.18971017/

The fibre cable had a break in it where it entered the external Openreach fibre termination box. Ultimately due to a poor initial installation if I'm being completely honest as the 300mm of fibre hadn't been clipped during installation and as such had eventually had enough movement when there was wind etc that the fibre had a break in it.

Anybody with Zen and had a full fibre upgrade? I'm currently on g.fast and full fibre is now available in my area. Signed up for 900/120 fibre with them and they sent out a router that arived next day. It's the same one I already have (fritz!box 7530, and not the Wifi6 version) so assuming an automated delivery? Should they be shipping out the AX models now, or the fiber routers?

Still awaiting confirmed dates for install - had a text message from openreach about external work "in the next few days" but that's about it so far.
