BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

The BT line checker is pretty conservative in its estimates, too.

It often states 35Mbit for lines that are literally 30 meters to the cabinet.

Hmm ...mine was saying 32mb and 7mb up. Best I've ever seen was 30mb (yes Im laughing as I type) and 8mb+ up. On average mine has always been around 27 - 28mb.

Whats the best place to read up on the best packages to get?

I'm currently really happy with my O2 'The Works' package and would like the equivilent offering really. Shame O2 dont offer Fibre.

Due to lack of demand, apparently, not many ISPs offer FTTC. It's basically a choice between BT Infinity or TalkTalk.

Unless you want to start faffing around with smaller ISPs that place usage caps on you, that is.

Personally, I'd get BT Infinity, then wait a year or two for more choices to come to the market.

Would agree with NathanE, BT unlimited (don't know details of your present package) which is 40mb down 10mb up and Unlimited d/loads. Other ISP's you will find will be capped d/load limits and a higher price to boot (if you require extra d/load limit).

No traffic shaping? Or at least no disruptive traffic shaping?

All ISPs have traffic shaping these days. Whether it actually affects or bothers you is another matter. Some people can't bear the thought that their 'totally legal downloads' are running ever so slightly slower at peak times. Other people just accept it as a fact of life.

£25 for BT Infinity, no caps. All you can eat, pretty much.

On a big ISP like BT or TalkTalk, rarely will you find that web surfing / gaming are affected. Their QoS is there purely to de-prioritise heavy download traffic.

Zero impact felt here and that is using Torrents at the so called bad times of the day. Gaming has been sweet as a nut anytime of day or night, as has pretty much everything tbh.

Well as I said I'm with O2 at the moment and am nothing but satisfied. I'd imagine BT Infinity can only be better in every possible way anyway.

Hmmm I'd put a hold on saying 'every possible way' but performance wise yes they are excellent, to date :)

On 17a this morning, looks like no fast path as well on the reset

Putting a 20Mb service in place through FTTC wouldn't make sense as there are ADSL services that are "up to 20Mb" since years back (even if said services never reach their top speeds, something FTTC by comparison is quite good at). They'd basically do a lot of work for having something that the ignorant mob thinks all ISPs have had for years, even if this isn't strictly true. 40Mb, and certainly 80Mb in coming months and years, makes more sense from a marketing perspective. My two pennies. :)

In other news, I randomly stumbled across my cab the other day - it's just around the corner. :D I estimate no more than 25-40 metres of copper end-to-end. Suddenly my results make a lot of sense.

BT are accelerating their infinty rollout, but instead of going for mega speed, wouldn't it be better to get a basic 20mb in place first for the whole of the UK, then start increasing speed for everyone NOT just a select few.

I am still annoyed at the fact my exchange gets upgraded next month but they are not bothering with my cabinet, so i still can't get the fibre anyway! My road is useless, can't get virgin down here either.
