BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

If I hypothetically wanted to download things using BitTorrent from a private tracker would my download/upload still be limited on those torrents?

I use a VPN for work, does any rate limiting apply to that?

Yes Bt uses deep level packet sniffing so no matter what tracker etc you try you will always be limited.

Torrents are the past and newsgroups are the future.

They only throttle torrents when needed from my experience. I've had times where torrents have been throttled for 5 days straight and other times where i'm maxing out download and upload at peak times.

You'd have to be crazy to torrent stuff from a public torrent site anyway unless your using VPN..

... nice first post :)

Thanks :D

Been lurking for some time.

I'm not happy about the way they deep level packet inspection. I think I'm going to go with Zen or someone and pay a horrific amount of money for 500gb of bandwidth, at least I'll know I can use it whenever I want.

Next thing you'll know they might cotton on to everyone using VPNs to get around the bandwidth limit and start rate limiting my VPN for work and then I'll be really annoyed.. I would just rather have a flat out amount to use, without throttling up or down, I think.

It's a tough choice though, been going back and forth for about a month now.

Sorry for starting a usenet vs torrent flamewar!

Not a problem :) oh and welcome along to the madhouse :D

If the DLM sees a period of stability and less erros it will turn the level of interleave down.

Ie fastpath as you call it.

Then I pray to god my line stays up/stable for this period because the lower pings are what I had with Be* and I've been hoping for these pings for quite some time! ;)

I am wondering if BT Infinity is good or not, because up near my end we can't get it yet. Although, I am waiting to get it.

Hmm. Wales & West Utilities are spending the next 13 weeks digging up our road and replacing the gas main (quite what is wrong with the metal pipes I don't know, but they're replacing them with plastic). They're also doing new pipes to every house.

Whilst they've got the road up and are laying pipes to every house what are the odds of BT coming and doing FTTC or FTTP? Or Virgin coming and laying cable in our road? Nil probably :(.

Looks like I've been switched to the 17a profile now. I was getting a 39999/9999 sync before and now it's only changed to 39999/10000 so no actual increase unsurprisingly. However the max attainable rate now shows this:

Code:
  	Downstream Upstream
Attainable rate (kbit/s)	80036	17049
SNR margin (dB)	20.3	10.5
Line attenuation (dB)	0	0
Output power (dBmV)	11.5	6.6

Not sure if any real faith can be placed in the max attainable rate figures, but before when I was on the 8c profile the max rate was about 50000kbps. Would be good if I did actually get anything near 80000 when they remove the 39999 cap :)

Also it seems my parents' line has been switched too. Previously it was syncing at around 36000/9999 and now it's 39999/10000. Max attainable rate on that shows 60348.

Had infinity three days now, was getting consistent 33/10 until this morning when it was down to 21/10, is it worth restarting the bt box, or give it the full 10 days to settle down.
