BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Looks like you've got the full 39999kbps sync as the 38717kbps profile is the maximum. Not sure why your speeds are so bad though.

With that said, screw speedtest or any other so-called speed testers, what speeds do you actually get in real-world downloads?

Downloaded a demo from Steam at a steady 2 megabytes per second, the same speed I attain on my 20MB BT Business ADSL at work

It's 100 times better than any BB I've ever had at home already, just not the full ticket :p

Sigh....

Would really like to get Fibre but my only option at the moment is Virgin which from what I hear has issues.

Looking at the BT site my exchange is not on any of the lists for future access. When I think about it I do live in a relatively deprived area guess that this could be the reason why :(

Virgin can be amazing, depends where you live tho.

I'd ask about on the VM forums for your area.

d_brennen - Your line is at full sync, are you using wireless??

Run TCP Optimizer if your using ethernet. Your on the limited package yes?

Wireless or wired give the same results. Gigabit Ethernet to the GbE socket on the hub, the same

Will have a look at TCP Optimiser but I suspect the line is just crap! I'll also look into cracking the hub to get some decent stats. I am on the up to 40MB/2MB package with the 40GB cap for now, I don't pirate and only really game/browse at home ;)

Thanks for all the advice guys

My speed has reduced significantly in the last couple of weeks. Any ideas what the cause may be? I've actually upgraded to the fully unlimited package now, as kept hitting the 40GB download limit.

I've turned on and off the router and modem. When it was first installed I was getting 37 mbit ish without a problem, now it does feel quite a bit more slow, downloads have suffered a lot. Steam only 1mbps now instead of 2.5-3.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the broadband has dropped a few times for about 10 minutes ish, and one day it was off four about 3 hrs but I found that was due to some work they were doing somehwhere. Come to think of it, it may have slowed since that point, but I can't say for sure.

Your IP profile must have dropped, go check it.

Maybe a line fault.

The IP profile doesn't drop from turning the modem off and on, it drops from errors (I've turned my modem off 10+ times in a row with no profile drop)

edit: OH also your modem might be overheating, is it wall mounted??

My DSLAM had the 17a profile upgrade last night -

I can't check the IP Profile, but I can't see what I'd gain by knowing anyway, it still would be slow.

Can I reset the modem some other way so that it does try to sync again?

The modem sits under the homehub, I suppose it could be overheating but it's not that warm where it sits. I'll try moving it.

The IP profile will go back up if the line has no fault, will take a few days tho.

Probably a line fault, do a quiet line test.

OK cheers. I will try a quiet line test at the first opportunity.

EDIT: Quiet line test seems OK. There is a very very faint noise but our phones have always had that, I think it's the broadcast quality of the DECT wireless handsets we have. Nothing to cause alarm as far as I can hear.

Quiet line test needs an analog phone fyi.

90% of the problems I've seen with infinity have been modem problems.

Ahh right, well I don't have one unfortunately.

Modem problems are common then? Any steps to take now or do I have to (and I really loathe doing it) contact BT?

Thanks for your help btw.

Walling mounting seems to help, but if the modem has already overheated it could be too late and you will need a replacement.

I'd just wall mount it and leave it a few days to see what happens.

Got mine installed today, nowhere near the estimated speeds but the engineer said it may take a week or so to settle

Had my infinity installed last March with similar initial performance to yours for the first few days. WAS NOT HAPPY, but being busy at work I hadn't had a chance to chase it for about a week. Then sat down to collect stats and it was perfect:rolleyes: Been trouble free since:cool:

Today's connection:

Seriously tempted to hack the modem though, if only to route through opendns.

To the people on 90meg+ I hate you :D

Altho my SNR is like 16 do think they will tweak that abit? I'd like 80meg sync :(

Its nice how it has SRA enabled, my line goes between 74 and 76mbit on the fly.
