I updated my post. Is the connection that good all round the UK (specifically Watford area)?
Guys don't be hating on lozzd and his £78 monthly 500gb capped 8 I.P address connection so the FBI have trouble finding him.
Well, my predicament is as follows:
I'm with Virgin on their mates rates package, so for phone, TV with Sky Sports etc and 50 Mbit I pay £70. I have massive issues with my broadband, so much that I cannot game or do much in the evening.
After a lot of complaining Virgin have said they will allow me to cancel. However, they have also said my connection will be 120Mbit in the Summer and it should be fixed. The thing is, I don't know how much they can cancel for me, be it broadband only or the whole lot, this is something I need to find out.
I can get Infinity installed for free and I can cancel it (and the phone line) with no charge within 14 days of the activation date. So I think I will find out the cancellation details from Virgin first and weigh up the options. Being able to "test drive" Infinity is a big bonus.
What is the bog standard router they give you like?

Explain?
They supply a Homehub 3 which only has 1 Gigabit port (3 * 100/10 ports) and you can't even do basic stuff like allowing ICMP requests.
I guess if you just want to plug it in and browse the web it's fine but if you need any more advanced features it's a non-starter.
Ah, crap. I need Gigabit Ethernet to stream HD over my home LAN. I'd also like ICMP requests. Can I buy an off the shelf router and use it instead?

I have a DIR 655. That do?
