BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Yes, has to be a VDSL version I just ordered a Draytek 2850N, to replaced a Draytek 2750N which I killed.

Just so there's no confusion Nightglow is referring to routers that replace the Homehub3 AND the Openreach VDSL2 modem.

If you just want to replace the HH3, but still use the Openreach modem, then any cable/PPPoE router will work as I outlined above.

When is 100MB coming to Infinity and how can I check my area?

It's not. 80/20 is in phase 2 of it's trial at the moment and should be commercially available in spring. 100Mbps "may" be available one day once/if vectoring is introduced.

Edit - Sorry by that I mean 100Mbps FTTC isn't available. FTTP on the other hand is only available in a handful of areas at the moment.

EDIT: Sorry for the confusion, hadn't even finish writing the thread, went & made a coffee & pc is snaffled by my mum.

And thanks Griff for clarifying things for me.:o

On the lappy now, I found the Draytek 2750N performed better than the Openreach modem, even the BT engineer was surprised how good it was.

And it has four gigabit ports, compared to one on the Openreach modem, plus the Draytek firewall performance is 100mb/s , compared to only firewall performance 50mb/s on the openreach modem according to BT engineer.

Not sure what are the benefits of the firewall performance?

Idiot question, if I move house to a non cable region, andcswitch o infinity, will I lose all my virgin.net and ntlworld email accounts?
How swiftly are they likely to be shut down?

It says 100Mbit on their website.

To be honest, 40 is fast enough (35 or whatever it would come in at), I can deal with less bandwidth for a working connection.

Not always true. Because of my proximity to the cabinet my FTTC connection has a max speed of 105Mb down, 40Mb up. Apparently according to the install engineer when he tested it.

Winning.

Attainable speed and what Openreach configure the ports to allow are two very different things.

80Mbps will be the most you can get from FTTC once the service goes live.

What's the difference? P = what?

Also, with usenet ssl downloads, is there any fair use policy?

FTTC - Fibre to the cabinet, then VDSL2 over copper to the property.

FTTP - Fibre to the premises. Fibre all the way to the building.

FTTC is much more widely available than FTTP at the moment.

And not as far as I know in answer the the second question.

No mention of Infinity though it shows up in the order process?

For Postcode WD2* ***:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 3.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 2.5Mbps and 6.5Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 4Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3Mbps and 7Mbps.

The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.

Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number check.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 4Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3Mbps and 7Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40 Mbps and upstream line speed of 10 Mbps.

The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.

Checked with the full address.

Update on mine (looking for further advice really)

During the day it almost always sits in and around 15mbps, obviously I run the BT test and when it drops to 14mbps it tells me that there's a problem. During the evening it almost always sits at around 25mbps (although just ran a test and only getting 21mbps although I do have Spotify running). My ISP say BT cant find a fault and it's got to the point where they're not even returning my emails now.

Is there anything else I can do? Is it possible that there's really not a fault? For the record BT have come out and replaced the modem and confirmed the socket is receiving 40/10. I've bypassed the router and my speedtest results are still the same so whatever the problem is it's out of my hands. I'm literally a stones throw from the cab as well.

Just check out the VM thread and the FTTC people bragging ;)

Here's mine, been downloading at 4.2MB/s on usenet since 12 last night using QOS on a WNR2000 with DD-WRT.

When the downloads stop it will be a flat line (few hours left).

Only just read the bit about you watching a film, so I guess yours would also be flat all day with no downloading :)

Griff for the last 3 months since joining Infinity my pings have been spot on. As CP88 says the spikes on the graph are when downloading at full speed.
