All good here...

Had a new modem fitted today by Kelly Communications, was told that the old one has a wiring fault which means it can't cope with the 80Mb upgrade in April!

On a serious note, hope it's true.

Finally got Infinity ordered from BT, well sort off?

I got an email on Tuesday to say Infinity was finally available in my area and naturally I went straight home and tried to order it online. After doing so I got confirmation emails to say my order had been confirmed and issued my yahoo id and password.

I phoned yesterday to give them my MAC code only to be told that my order should not have gone through as because my line wasn't with BT they needed to transfer the line back first and activate standard broadband and then the day after it is activated I can phone back and get Infinity ordered.

Not a great start but heres hoping I actually get it.

I need to order a new line (reactivate an existing line really) and get Infinity installed. Can it all be done in one engineer visit? What are the lead times like? Should I expect the appointment to be a week or so after ordering?

Well, after the good, comes teh not so good :(

After finishing up for the day I decided to have a play with some of the settings on the router and there is an issue where everything I make a change to the settings which requires a reboot the internet connection drops and I have to manually go to internet settings, change the password, apply, reboot agin before the net connection comes back up :( - ive rasied this this Draytek.

But there is another issue, which I didn't notice until I couldn't access the wifi repeater in the lounge.

My setup goes:

Connection into houe -> 2850n (In study and hardwired to PC / Printer / Laptop and Homeplug) -> Homeplug (Study) -> Homeplug (Lounge) -> 2nr router / WAP -> Media Streamer and BT Vision Box / TV

After looking on my PC the network "Map" couldn't "see" the homeplugs or anything beyong so, no media straemer (cant use) No WAP (no extended signal to that side of the house) and, worst of all, no iplayer or on demand TV :(

After some reading up it appears to be some IP allocation of teh homeplugs and a reboot of these will help, it did and the Streamer / WAP etc are fine, but no iPLayer im getting a "Code 0, Failed to load resource"

After more reading a reset of teh BT Vision Box seems to cure it, so reboot that (Hard reboot, cable out the back jobby).

I am then met with the boot up screen

Boroadbank Connection - Tick

Connection to Home Hub - X

Rinse, repeat, cant even get any TV without the HH being installed, it just won't go past this stage :(

It appears that in the recent software update to Vision (notice the colours have changes slightly) the reboot requires it to scan and check for the HH3 (IP allocation / confirmation or something ?) so all up and running nicely (bar the PITA manual input of password on any option changes to teh 2850n) BUT no TV :(

Unplugged everything and put OR modem and HH3 back in - straight in, media streamer, TV, Iplayer OD TV.

It was late by the time id got to this point and have to leasve the TV / Media streamer fully up and running today as the wife is at home with the kids.

But can anyone help with the HH scan at start up of teh Vision Box and any workround (which also leaves me with iplayer) ?

Many thanks

FINALLY got this (looks like) resolved with the help of DrayTek support and BT forums :)

  • Did a complete factory reset of the router
  • Connected up with just the Infinity connection in and one Ethernet to my PC
  • Set up internet connection
  • Then under LAN -> General Set Up -> LAN1 Details Page -> DNS Server IP Address -> Prinary IP Address 8.8.8.8 and Secondary IP Address 8.8.4.4
  • Rebooted the router after saving the new settings
  • Waited until I had an internet connection
  • Lead out the back of the Vision Box
  • Plugged in the ethernet connected to the homeplug
  • Re powered up / rebooted the Vision Box
  • Got past the HH3 authentification !
  • Went into iPlayer and it works !!!!

So all in all it looks like that has done the trick :)

Guys, since I have not had a BT line put in for years, how far will the BT engineer remote the modem and phone socket away from the master socket? And how much would this potentially affect the speed I get? I only ask because there are no plug sockets near where the master socket is, I would ideally need it remoting around 10 meters away.

The OR engineer, provided you ask him nicely enough and supply him with enough cups of tea and biscuits, will move the master socket as far as you want.

Moving the master socket will have no impact*on speed.

* - Technically it might but it would be so small it's would be next to impossible to detect.

Moving to the master socket got me from 3mb to 8 on a standard ADSL line years ago. Whilst in most scenarios, this is probably not going to help, it doesn't mean it won't if you have a case of dodgy wiring.

I should have said no negative impact in my previous post as you've correctly pointed out it can have a very pleasant positive effect where dodgy internal wiring is concerned.

How would it be positive? Would they re-route where it comes in the house? Thought the entry point was only even in one place and they simply tap on another pair and move it?

I said it "could" be positive in certain situations where you have dodgy internal wiring. I.E If your telephone wiring hasn't been touched since 1963 then moving/installing a new master socket could be "positive".

If you're wiring is already in good condition then obviously moving the master socket a few metres isn't going to have any impact at all.

My engie was quite happy to "move" the socket rather than faf about with 20 or 30 meters of extension cable :P

Due to how my sockets are wired though I did have to have two disabled to allow the master to move from the lounge to the study (where my PC is)

So I did have

Lounge master -------- Hall ------- Study

Now have

Lounge (dead) -------- Hall (Dead) ------ Study master

I have wireless phones off a single base station so its not an issue :)

I had tea (gratefully accepted) and bickkies (not bothered) in stock, just in case.

A couple of questions to ask the engineer while plying them with tea/coffe and biccies.

1. Where is the cabinet? (mine is about 450m away, according to google routing)
2. Are the cables to my home, copper or aluminium? (aluminium for me)

3. What's my attenuation?
4. Can I take a photo of the JDSU/EXFO line diagnostics.
