BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

We'll BT site is still saying March 31st for me. I hope they are still going to do that but I'll not get my hopes up.

To think, I could be just over a month away from genuinely not utterly crap internet.

Can you guys post some thinkbroadband meters, really thinking of getting bt infinity but It depends how good it is for gaming as I want to stream a lot and get low pings in games etc

What other cons/pros do they have?

Just made a new one (will be torrenting all night tho). I'm using using a WNR2000 with DD-WRT.

It's great for gaming at all times, plenty of servers on BF3 with pings as low as 12ms:D.

As for streaming, I can stream 25gig MKV's from megashares with VLC no problem:cool:.

As well as my modem only syncing at 68mbit instead of the 79mbit attainable, interleaving has kicked in on my line.
Bah! Another 10ms on my pings. (Still only 20ms to bbc.co.uk, but still, 10ms was better). I can pinpoint the time on the graphs when it kicked in, too.

Is there a "profile" like ADSL where if the DSLAM thinks the connection has dropped too much it slows down the connection? I unplugged the modem quite a few times over the last month to do various rewiring and tidying, it's strange that I would have 80mbit attainable but it would only sync at 68.

Any date which is the end of a quarter isn't a 'proper rollout date' but an estimate/placeholder.

When the date changes to something else, that will be a real date.

If say 2 weeks before the end of March, it hasn't been done, then the date will automatically change to the next placeholder date (31 June)..but could actually be enabled at any time.

The best way of finding out how close you are to going live is going out, finding your BT cabinet and seeing if the FTTC one has been installed - and if it has is it humming (i.e. are the fans powered up?) as that has to be done by the local power company and not BT. It can also add months of delay after the cabinet is there..

Elgin is a useful site to see if BT/the power company have any work planned in your area.

Guys, since I have not had a BT line put in for years, how far will the BT engineer remote the modem and phone socket away from the master socket? And how much would this potentially affect the speed I get? I only ask because there are no plug sockets near where the master socket is, I would ideally need it remoting around 10 meters away.

They will either relocate the master socket or fit a 'data extension kit' which allows them to reposition things by upto 30 meters. It won't affect the speed you get.

One thing i hate about infinity is the DLM and interleaving, i dont get the best speeds, but 14mb is better than 3mb on adls2 (1060m of aluminium string)

For 3 days i was getting 14ms to bbc, then it was 24ms, and now its between 24 and 34.

Been on it nearly a year now.

My connection was fine while on 14ms , i think its way too aggressive

It has DLM yes, but it shouldn't matter how many times you unplug it. All about the errors!

Hmm, bah.

My connection has been up 5 days, and these are the error stats:

Does that look too high?

I wonder if there is something I can do to improve the wiring a bit. I've got 4 phone sockets that are "disabled" (by the BT engineer) so that I could have the modem in the study.

Just ordered BT infinity which should be fitted next Wednesday. Infinity wasn't due here until the end of march but I thought I'd do my usual check to see if dates had updated and they had and now says NOW AVAILABLE :D

Is there anything I should be worried about or check whilst the engineer is here?

I feel kind of conned as BT sold me there internet connection 6 months ago saying if I took there unlimited broadband package upto 20mb, Then when infinity was available in my area it would be the same price. So should just take a simple call and book a engineer. But when phoning them 10 minutes ago they said my package was going to cost another £7 so I had to do some trimming to bring it down :p I'm not a tight arse its just principle!

Could you explain in a bit more details about those questions and what are good answers and bad from the engineer? And if he answers any of them in not a good way is there anything I can do about them ie if the cable is copper or aluminium?
I know the cabinet is just down the end of the cul-de-sac I live in so about 30-40 metres away I guess. I saw them upgrading them the other day.

Most of the questions, and answers, are useful for future information. Should you have any issues then you've got first hand information to fall back on.

For example even though you can unlock the Huawei modem to obtains line stats it won't show attenuation hence I suggested you ask the engineer and make a note of it.

You don't need to ask any questions at all but for the sake of being friendly and having a chat you might as well.

~TB~ Great you have finally sorted your problems.:D

Cheers mate

Still have two issues :|

First one is if i have to reboot the router I have to unplug all but the incoming line and 1 ethernet cable (to my PC) otherwise it wont connect to the interwebs or even sometimes swap the password (there isnt a password for Infinity, but you have to include in teh setup page)

Second one is connection speed (although im not 100% this is the router) - My D/L speed has dropped a few meg on average (~37 to low 30s or even high 20s) and UL quite a bit (from high 8 megs to between 5 and 7) - but as I say im not sure its the router. I had good speeds when initially connected (higher than the HH) but they have dropped over teh weekend following changing teh DNS servers (this casnt of effected them can it?) - but even whalloping the old router and HH3 in I have speed drop and Speedtest is running like a dog for me. Does it take a few days to re-synch or whatever ?

Engineers shouldnt be giving you line stats or attenuation as its information for your CP, and definately shouldnt allow you to take photos of their jdsu/exfo XD all the information is for the CPs eyes not yours unfortunately

Most OR engineers are human beings, not robots, and as a result have no issue in giving line stats.
