BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

opethdisciple That line jack dates from around 1985, I'm sure you could have it updated to the newer master socket foc, I got mine done foc.

Easy to relocate it, only 2 wires connected, but if you remove the cover, what's the wiring condition like, been there 25 years plus, then it's going to be a bit rough.

What does FOC mean?

opethdisciple, Imagine the engineer turns up and it's not possible to install it, they are not going to make you have it anyway, because that would be impossible! Honestly, your thinking to much about it, I was the same. The engineer will look after you, they are really good.

The engineer who installed mine told me a woman canceled hers because he was a few hours late. Ungratefull or what!

The 30m extention is CAT5e btw.

BT retail telling you different things is typical, you wont get an answer from Openreach about the Infinity contract though because it's nothing to do with them.

Have you tried the BT forums? There is a contact form for the moderators on there and they are good, they should be able to confirm for definate about the contract. I'm sure you can cancel before it's actually connected though.

You might try posting on the thinkbroadband forums aswell, there are some Openreach staff that post there in their spare time that might help if they see your post.

Good luck.

Ok spoke with some one in the technical department today, and they think it would be possible to have the master socket moved and a new one installed in my loft as part of the infinity package.

They said if it wasnt possible to do I wouldnt be contracted.

I have one question however. Other than Bit torrent, there arent any peak time traffic shapping that affects anything else is there, such as browsing, bbc iplayer, gaming etc...?

The package im intersted in is the unlimited one anyway so hopefully not.

Also I wont need to upgrade the phones in my house will I? (Do the phones still need adsl filters?)

I wont need to install any 'software' on any ofthe computers will I?

The router has at least 3 ethernet sockets to attach 3 computers?

Apart from Bit Torrent, there isn't any other peak time traffic shaping that I'm aware of.

You won't have to upgrade the phones in your house, however you will have to remove all the filters as they are not needed on fibre connection.

You won't need to install any other software on any of the computers. Either wired or wireless as per your usual standard.

Yes, it has 4 ethernet sockets iirc.

I know I've not had any faults with BT Infinity so far but yesterday my speed dropped to 20mbps. Tried rebooting the HH3 and openreach router but no luck. Called "Tech Support" and they offered to send an engineer to my house to fix it. I've already had 2 engineer visits, one for when I had infinity installed and another a couple of days ago as my openreach modem had a fault. I also asked them to turn off interleaved mode and the reply I got was " Sorry sir can you explain what that is? " I literally laughed at him. Clueless people. He then had to ask a senior member of staff about it and told me it'd be done within 48 hours. Can't say I'm too happy about the lack of their knowledge. He's also told me with interleaved off I'll get the full speeds back again, but I have my doubts about it. Only a few weeks in and already more problems than I had with Be* over a period of 3 years.

Be are decent at sorting out problems but I have had my fair share of issues with them.

Over the 4-5 years I'v been with them I'v had:

1. DNS issues (now use google dns)
2. Websites not being loadable (recently)
3. Periodic blocking of filesonic and oron and probably other upload sites
4. Max speed is 1.6MB/s...
5. Router disconnects from BFBC2 after twenty minuites the first time I connect to a server, after that it is ok.

The good:

1. Decent support and they do try to go out of their way to help you.
2. Dropped the price of my broadband after a few years.
3. You can easily switch between interleaved and passthrough by clicking on a button.
4. Absolutly no traffic shapping on anything, and totally unlimited

I really dont know if I should make the switch....

Ordered this today, got to wait until the 16th of May for the engineer come and "install" it.

I'll just stick this here then I can quote myself when I run the test again with infinity!

I think I had 1 problem with Be* in 3 years, and that was because BT were doing work on the exchange so it was out of Be*'s reach. The main reason I switched over to Infinity was because of the speeds but to be honest if I'm paying for 40mb/10mb connection then I very well expect to receive that. I was guaranteed minimum 34mb but I'm not even getting that. If they don't fix this soon I'll be putting in a request to cancel my contract based on them not offering me the service they promised when I signed the contract.

I just hope Be* offer FTTC soon and I'll be going back to them.

Im sure they will sort out your speed issues ^

BT have told me I will get full speed 4MB/s....

By making the switch I will also be saving an extra £11 a month.

When the engineer came the other day he had a device to record the speed and he said I was getting 47mb and 10mb upload but as it was capped to 40mb I'd only get 40, however because I have a data extension cable I get 37meg, or atleast I'm supposed to. Getting 20meg now -_-.

Well it seems that everthing should* be ok, for me to get the infinity installed.

Is every one that has made the switch happy, with the level of service, speed and the alround quality of service?

Another question I have, for those that have been using BT Infinity for a couple of months now or longer, do the speeds stay constant throught the day? Speeds for browsing for example, there isnt congestion on the lines, causing slow down during peak hours?

Im still scared to make this jump, especially with BT's bad track record etc... with phorm and other things.

As a few of you have already said and tested, things like oron, filesone and rapidsahre do work with BT, but I need to make 100% sure, as I cant afford to make the leap in to an 18month contract to find these things dont work!

Well I just went from an embarassingly slow 1.5Mbps with a strong wind to :

So very happy with that. Only found out that the 300GB cap had been removed from option 2 after I ordered so that was an unexpected bonus as well :D

Is there any easy way to find out where your nearest cabinet is? Or someone at BT I can email?

I live out in the sticks and our phone line disappears into some woodland before heading off to the nearest town/village so it's not the easier to follow....

Ok, guys Im very close to making the order.

I need to verify the follwing if some one would be so kind to put my mind at rest.

1. During peak hours that p2p is throttled, other types of traffic ie http etc... are not throttled? (ie the speeds are consitatnt throught the day, no peak time deeps)

2. Things such as oron, filesonic, rapidshare are indeed working?

3. If I want to go in to the router and set my own dns ip's and lock down my wireless, all these things are configurable? (I turn broadcast off and make my wireless key about 30 characters)

Is your cabinet due to get FTTC? If so i might be able to tell you what cabinet number you are on. I will need you postcode though!
