BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Thanks.

Your nearly hitting 5MB/s!

Is it possible for someone to take a screen shoot of how slow bit torrent is whilst downloading a linux distro?

Download is nice and fast, upload is capped to 1mbit 24/7

Its off peak atm tho.. peak times torrents won't work.

Ok one final time I promise.

Filesonic and Oron, are all working for BT infinity users?

I cant afford to make the jump in to an 18month contract to find these are broken, where they are currently working with BE.

Edit* Is this guy talking crap? (See below)

http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/1-5-Month-BT-Infinity-review/m-p/98367

There has been a problem with the openreach modems as of lately and this may be the problem. I had an overheating issue with my modem and BT sent out an engineer the next day to replace it free of charge and it all seems dandy again.

The only thing I have seen drop is torrent download speeds during peak time, nothing else is affected.

FTP/rapidshare/megashare/streaming I get full speeds day and night.

Hmm dont know what to say now.

I just finished talkingto BT about the telephone side of things, and all seems good.

Im close to the cabinet so would basically pull max speeds.

Only problem is my internal wiring is not going to work.

The person I spoke to told me, that the BT engineer would not be coming to install a master socket. All he is going to do is put some equipemt in to an existing master socket etc... and my (supposed - Iv never found it) master socket is on the first floor and all the computers and the modem/router will be located on the third floor.

30 meter cable may not be enough to reach up there.

Like I said before I need an engineer to come and tell me if this is possible.

The person I spoke to yesterday told me to just get my mac code, and the engineer will survey the house during the install and if things arnet going to work I can cancel.

However the person I just spoke to told me it wont work like that, as the engineer is not coming to install a master socket, and that during the order process for the infinity, questions will already have been asked about the location of existing master sockets, etc etc etc....

Also they told me that I can only cancel by 12 noon the day before the install.... but how do I know its doable, untill the engineer arrives!

They told me, that as soon a the engineer arrives to install, Im already in the 18 month contract, and to cancel at that point if it cant be installed would cost £14 x 18 months of the contract! Very helpful of them!

So it doesnt sound like I can get this product.

May have to call them up again, as Im sure some one will give me a different answer!

shizzle!

Edit*

Ok so I have found my master socket, and its at the bottom floor next to my front door, looks like this:

Now running a 30 meter cable might be within reach, but it isnt going to be easy or neat!

Is it possible to relocate these things?

You can change the master socket from the original master socket to any other connected to it, however not one running off an extension off another.

opethdisciple That line jack dates from around 1985, I'm sure you could have it updated to the newer master socket foc, I got mine done foc.

Easy to relocate it, only 2 wires connected, but if you remove the cover, what's the wiring condition like, been there 25 years plus, then it's going to be a bit rough.

Ah, ummm, i know for sure the Billion does ipv6 via a beta firmware. Not sure on the others though.

That's something i should keep an eye out for i take it?

im not 100% on this BUT if your router doesnt do ipv6 then what would one have to do? people rarely talk about ipv6 here so im still kind of lost.i was going to spend around 150 quid on a router but if ipv4 is outdated and the adresses due to run out sometime soon(2012) then id probably have to replace my router in 1-2 years no?

Yeah i read the same today after you posted above....

Hmmmm, Why does the Billion have to be so god damn ugly?!

This^ the engineer does the survey when he comes to install, he will assess if it can be installed and discuss the options with you.

You can cancel before it's installed, if it can't be installed or your not happy with what needs to be done to get it installed, then you can cancel.

If you don't have an NTE5 (master socket), which it doesn't sound like you have, then he will install one as a matter of course because it's needed for the install.

If I was you I'd be looking to get the NTE5 installed near a power socket as close to the point of entrie as possible, then you can site the modem there and run some CAT5e to where you need it. You could have the router next to the modem or on the end of the CAT5e.

Well I currently pay around £50 for phone and broadband every month.

With BT Infinity phone and Broadband bundle it will be about £39, technically, the money I save by making the move in the first year, I can spend on an engineer to move my master socket to the top floor in my house (if its around £100)

Its do able. I cant run ethernet cables from the master socket from where it currently is located.

It would be an eye sore, be very difficult and may even be over 30 meters.

Im going to ring BT open reach tomorrow to see what they have to say.

Is all this hassle worth it?

The second person I spoke to today who was very knowledable, told me that as soon as the engineer arrives to do the install your contracted for 18months, whether or not its installable. The point is, upon order, they will ask me questions, about my house which are prerequisites for the infinity to work.

At the point the engineer arrives, it is not possible to cancel with out incurring £14x18 cancellation fees.

*Supposedly!
