BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BALLsS!!!!!!!!

Was getting used to my new 15mb line and drove home in a middle of a bad lighting storm to find my girls pc does not turn on and the white openreach modem broke....
1 dog ran away. 1 dog broke the front door to get in and 1 dog jumped though the shed window

Can anyone tell me what lights are on the openreach modem when it's working?
Power light if off. DSL light is off. Lan 1 light is on and Lan 2 light is flashing like crazy and it does not even have a cable plugged in

I should hopefully be getting Infinity in September (Although for some reason the BT site has moved it to 31st March, but Samknows still states 1st Sept).

What is the minimum speed you should be getting with Infinity? And if you don't get those minimum speeds, will BT do anything to try reach the minimum speed?

Also, how would you know if they will enable fibre to your closest cabinet?

Ok, guys Im very close to making the order.

I need to verify the follwing if some one would be so kind to put my mind at rest.

1. During peak hours that p2p is throttled, other types of traffic ie http etc... are not throttled? (ie the speeds are consitatnt throught the day, no peak time deeps)

2. Things such as oron, filesonic, rapidshare are indeed working?

3. If I want to go in to the router and set my own dns ip's and lock down my wireless, all these things are configurable? (I turn broadcast off and make my wireless key about 30 characters)

^ No one care to put my mind at ease before I take the plunge in to an 18month contract?

Ok, well I guess thas not a big issue really, just got a habit now, since BE's DNS was awfull.

There is definetly no throttling at peak times of http traffic etc? No dipping of speeds?

I guess it getting near for me to bite the bullet and make the leap!

I've been with IdNet nearly a month now and am starting to feel the bandwidth limits. 30GB peak isn't an awful lot when you have a 30Mb line. I've crept over by 10GB this month. Gonna have to keep an eye on it in future and do my downloading first thing in the morning.

Is your cabinet due to get FTTC? If so i might be able to tell you what cabinet number you are on. I will need you postcode though!

I know my exchange (Twyford THTF) is being enabled come 1st July, but not sure about my cabinet. If I search on BT Wholesale Availability Checker I get this:

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 1.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 2.5Mbps.

Your exchange is planned to have ADSL2+ by 31st July 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 1st July 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 500Kbps and upstream line speed of 100Kbps.

So looks like I may be too far from my cabinet? (not surprised tbh considering where I live)

I'd wait and see.. you never know. BT told me I was probably too far away but the tech would give it a try anyway. I'm currently getting 30Mbp. I couldn't believe it when the guy came back from the cabinet... nor could he:)

Just got BT Infinity in the new home i moved to and im getting 37Mb Download and 8 Mb Upload !

Loving the upload speed indeed.

I did ditch the BT Home Hub 3 that i was supplied and used my existing Apple Airport Extreme that i was using.

Very fast indeed and i dont think i have much contention as well as it seems no one is on broadband along my road.

Oh i got them to cable the extension kit upstairs as the main PC lives there.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, just wait and see.

Got Infinity installed today

The JDSU said my line length was over 300 meters and if line was uncapped would sync a 50mb

basically full sync as the BT VDSL 8C profile is limited to that.

The ping to mulitplay is 17ms

ping to bbc is 13ms

ping to various uk sites between 13 and 18 ms

My Gateway location is Nottingham.

Silly question, but do you need a special kind of modem for BT infinity?

I'm currently using a Netgear DGND3300 with BE, and my contract is coming to an end soon.

Scroll up and look at the pic posted above, the white box ion the right is the BT VDSL Modem. :)

I get FTTC installed on the 17th! :D

You get supplied with a Modem and with a Router.

Just like Lustral three posts above you, most people bin the Router and plug the supplied Modem into the WAN port on their Router.

Order has been put through and installation will take place on the 18th May.

Here is my current speed so I can compare to next week:

I download at 1.7MB/s despite the above results.
