Just checked out my new house where I've ordered BT Infinity. There is no phone line to it. The telegraph pole outside has lines to the houses either side but not mine :(. No sockets internally either.

I hope it doesn't push back my activation date due to needing a 'special engineer' or something equally as bizarre :P. On that note, still haven't received a confirmation email so may give them a ring tomorrow, also informing them of the literal lack of phone line!

notice if the snr is lower the maxrate goes higher because with snr 5.9 maxrate was 88960
snr at 7 maxrate 83580

how do i control the snr and how is the snr set

the SNR margin was at 5.9 when i had a sync speed of 76meg
it went back to full 80 speed lastnight and back on fasthpath with snr of 7

^^ Could be due to the flooding - I had intermittent connectivity for awhile earlier and BT's DNS servers (or some of them anyway) have been erratic I had to swap over to google's to get decent browsing.

EDIT: Currently 3 different cable damage issues ongoing causing widespread issues - 2 due to flooding (South West area) and one due to suspected theft or criminal damage (London).

Thanks mate, was pretty solid 80/20 a few hours after I posted that, but half another ago today it seems I'm hitting 2.8MB downloads again...

I'm hoping this will be some magic bullet too, I was getting 90mbit attainable, 80mbit full sync when installed just over a year ago.

Now I'm down to 70mbit attainable but syncing at 60mbit with interleaving :(

How old is the house?

All the houses in the area are 19th century. My house is terraced and the identical houses either side have lines from the telegraph pole to their houses, but there's none to mine. Guessing the old person who lived there before must have lived there a very long time and didn't want a phone :p.

When I ordered, BT said a connection charge of £130 is usually required, but with all new orders through them, it's free. Other ISPS i.e o2 have said a new phone line fee is required.

It must be easy to do. Worried engineer will turn up and say he can't do it, needs a 'special one' as was the case when we had Sky at a different place and the dish had to go up higher.

Had a push back email off Openreach. Turns out our local council are being dicks and not allowing any digging to free up the block ducts near the exchange. Philistines..I bet they are in collusion with Virgin. LOL

Most on here will tell you go with Sky Fibre Pro if you can get it.

The Sky service doesn't have traffic shaping.

Thanks for the replies. Any particular reason why most people recommend Sky? Is it to do with BT traffic shaping P2P?

Since Sky increased their line rental, it meant BT Infinity 2 was a few pounds cheaper, but when BT increase their prices in January, they're going to be fairly close, so I don't really mind either. The most important thing is that they're unlimited / not capped and that the speed isn't slowed down to stupid levels on browsing, streaming and normal downloading, (I don't really use P2P).

When you viewed the house did you not check or ask about the phone line ? One of the first things I considered when moving house when I was in rental property and then finally buying your own house. Does it have a phone line and how good is the internet in the area.

One flat I moved into had phone sockets but BT (and Plusnet) said it was not connected and I might have to pay £120 connection. The exchange was actually 50 yards across the road I could see it from the front room. When the engineer came he looked at the socket then went to the exchange, when he came back he said its all connected already he just had to do the necessary at the exchange so I never paid the connection fee.

Engineer will have to go up the pole and connect the wiring to the house so they should send one who is qualified to do so. If there is no master socket in the house make sure you plan it beforehand where you want the master socket to be for convenience to your PC and discuss this with the engineer.

Ok I've had BT Infinity installed, little hassle and good speeds so far.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to get the modem to work with my Asus RTN56U? When I plug it into my network and try to get a web address I get "You have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N56U." My home network is on a different subnet mask to the BT router thats true, but shouldn't the modem get its IP from that? I know with the Virgin Superhub you need to enable modem only mode, but this is a separate modem/router, so wouldn't have expected to need to set anything else differently?

And secondly, can I use the BTHH as a wireless extender (eg disable routing functions)?

I've entered my account details, set the asus to PPPoE, and it detects, but it doesn't seem to be able to get an internet connection? Switch back to the BT HH3 and its fine..

Woohoo,

Road been dug up near cabinet then filled back in today so hopefully thats the power issues sorted and i can order soon!

Not likely that i will have it before the end of the year but still glad progress has finally been made
