BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

FTTC DLM is a bit quicker to react than ADSL DLM and recovers much quicker, if the line is error free for the next 36 hours I would think it will remove the interleave.

Thats one nice thing about infinity - once interleaving kicked in on ADSL2+ it took forever to go away if it ever did - usually I had to get ELC to intervene to get it done - again completely ridiculous that they have no provision for sorting things as simple as that through normal support.

When the BT engineer managed to trap our line in the door on the box on the pole and the resultant problems interleaving kicked in hard on infinity but once it was sorted it disabled itself again 3 days later :)

Only reason I stick with BT is because when everything works its rock solid, stable and I can't fault it, but once anything breaks it all falls apart and I have to go through the motions of dealing with it through normal support til they've been around and around in a loop a couple of times, then either directcall ELC or the head of openreach to actually get it done (which then gets it sorted in usually 2 days max).

My cabinet is finally showing up on the BT site as being ready for 31 Mar 13 so I have registered my interest and will keep my fingers crossed!

I'd just like some info on pricing if possible. What's the actual price you pay for the service each month? I've looked at their site and will probably go for the 76MB option. I've seen that it works out cheaper to pay for 12 months line rental in one go so I'll probably do this. I currently pay about £22 per month for my phone with the Post Office and then pay £12 to Be for my broadband. Do BT give you free calls to mobiles at the weekend ( I get this with my current phone)?

After registering my interest about 8 months ago when it showed my exchange being upgraded December 2012, I got a call Last Thursday from BT offering me Infinity :)

I spoke to the nice lady who told me (an I got it in writing too ;) ) my speeds would be (approximatly) 62mbps Down, and 20mbps Up...

Which is a nice improvement from the current rubbish I'm getting from Virgin (National) 1.4mbps Down, and 0.8mbps Up (which dropped to 0.3mbps down and 0.5 up over Christmas!)... As I work from home and dial into my office regularly, it's like wading through treacle!!

I asked if she could phone me back later (we were on our way out!), and left it there.

When I got back in I checked with both PlusNet and Sky on their FTTC connections and they (sort of) confirmed these speeds! I also had a look on the Broadband Resource website.

about 20 minutes later She phoned back and we talked for quite some time, and got the initial ball rolling. She said I'd need my MAC code from Virgin (which I knew!) and she would phone back on 2nd Jan at 11am "If that was okay!?"

Cue 45 minutes 'On Hold' with Virgin to get my MAC code (which I've read in various places, including Virgins own forums!, is standard practice if you select that particular menu on the phone system), When I got through, they actually gave it to me quite happily, when I told them the improvement in speed, and my needs "There's not really anything we can do to keep you as a customer! is there??", "Not unless Virgin want to run Fibre up my street, or start rolling out FTTC!".

On 2nd at 11:02am (as promised) BT rang back and I put the order through!!... I should be up and running on Infinity Option 2 at, or near, the quoted speeds (even if I got 20mbps Down I'd be happy!!!) all for £6 more than I was paying Virgin (and their prices are going up in 2 days!!)...

Should all be installed and Live by about 20th Jan :)

You might want to have a look at Plusnet. They are cheaper in some cases.

It is. :(

Mine was 31/12/12, now its 31/03/13 :( They are still installing cabinets around the estate so I'm not holding out much hope.

I'm the same. But the December date only appeared in Novemeber so I knew it would'nt be done by then. Just hoping it will be done in this quarter. Fingers crossed.

Who to go with

So with the exchange install dates creeping nearer, I'm now wondering who to go with...

Currently with O2/Be for broadband, BT at £15.45 a month for line rental and also BT £5.15 for unlimited calls.

Sky Unlimited Fibre broadband is £20 or £30 a month depending on speed (40/10 or 80/20). Sky are like how O2/Be are with ADSL2 and are truly unlimited, no throttling etc.
You must take Sky phone Line Rental at £14.50 a month. You get inclusive calls at weekends, or for +£5 a month you get unlimited anytime UK landline calls 24/7.

BT "Unlimited" fibre broadband is £26 a month for 80/20, but isn't truly unlimited and has lots of traffic shaping etc. You must take BT phone Line Rental at £15.45 a month. You get inclusive calls at weekends, or for +£5.15 a month you get unlimited anytime UK landline calls 24/7.

A year on Sky 80/20 with unlimited calls is 60 + 174 + 360 = £594
A year on BT 80/20 with unlimited calls is 61.80 + 185.40 + 312 = £559.20

Does anyone know if Sky do any discounts or anything for existing Sky TV customers?
Are there any others worth considering?
And are EE worth looking at? I'm an 4G EE mobile customer if that's worth any discount... but I don't have a clue what they're like with "unlimited" and throttling etc.

Westy, go with Sky, I'm only down the road from you, & I'm having numerous issues BT Infinity, high ping, low speed at times, throttling & frequent resyncing, always seem to be Sunday mornings lately:mad:.

BT won't sort the problem, so I raised a case with Ofcom over it, most of my problems are distance from my green cabinet & the poor condition of the cable.

Westy just call sky up when it time and do some haggling with them, I was offered £3 a month Line rental a couple of months ago always worth calling up and seeing what they can do offers wise.

Also might be worth playing the Plusnet card saying you can get 80/20 for £20.

It's cheaper if you pay for the Sky line rental upfront. Also, have a look at Plusnet.
