BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Yea, Inifinity 3. It has gone back down to 70/20, but last night it got up to 293 down. Maybe they were just doing line testing for the jump to 320, which is rumoured for this year.

So as I thought, unless you pay the £5 they throttle down your VPN and FTP.

I don't see any mention of throttling. It reads more like QoS to me.

Throttling to me means rate capping and they don't state that they do that for unlimited products.

QoS is a good thing in my eyes. In theory so long as the network isn't massively oversubscribed, there should be little detrimental effect to file downloads while keeping low-bandwidth consuming but more sensitive applications like online gaming, VoIP and VPN running smoother.

Edit: Obviously it would be nice if everyone could use their connections to the max at the same time without the networking falling over but as that's never going to happen (costs) QoS is here to stay unless an ISP wants to get a reputation for e.g. being **** for gamers, etc.

Is that part of the trial FTTP they're running in Cornwall with 300mb/s connections.?

If you have FTTP (im one of the lucky ones - based in York) you can upgrade to 160mb already. I had it for a while and then downgraded from option 3 to option 2 because I didn't need the extra speed, despite being sold as a 160mb service it would constantly run at 260-280mb.

Ah right, we've just got our terms mixed :). To me throttling is any sort of traffic management, QoS, etc. I can do QoS within my own network, so once traffic reaches one of my modems I want it to be completely unrestricted by the ISP. Hence why I'm with BeThere for ADSL2+, and it looks like Sky will be the best ISP for me when FTTC finally gets done.

Its not comparable to the QoS you do within your own network tho (other than in a general sense). It means that the network doesn't get saturated by non-time sensitive traffic.

Hi all,
Thinking about joining BT Infinity 2, but need to know about connectivity.
Will devices that use wireless G signal, i.e Iphone 4s connect to the hub or is it purely N signal devices.
Thanks in advance.

It's backwards compatible with n/g/b devices.

YAY. Had inifinity installed a couple of days a go and had nothing but line drops since. Every 30s-1m my connection to the internet will drop for 5-10 seconds.

Gave them a call and their engineers are going to look into it and give me a call back tomorrow.

Not impressed at the moment, in a bit of a mood.

It would be better to say that throttling (rate limiting) and QoS (packet prioritisation) are forms of traffic management. :) If you need QoS on your own network, then your ISP certainly needs to use it, because you're not the only user on their network; their network is contended.

What's the price difference between Option 2 and Option 3? Also, when you downgraded, did they replace the fibre line to your house with a copper line for VDSL2? Or did they simply keep the fibre line and downgrade your bandwidth?

To anyone who has had the Bt checker tell you there are no dates (no fibre for you) for fibre I advise you to check again.
My cabinet is finally listed and at March too!

Yay

@Bry

If that's March 31st 2013, it's just an end-of-quarter holding date. Mine has just moved there after being projected for 31st December 2012. If you want a more solid date, try emailing nga.enquiries <at> openreach.co.uk. If you can supply them with your exchange and cabinet number, they'll give you a more realistic date. :)

I think I may have fixed this by moving my ethernet cable from the Gig-E port to one of the normal ethernet ports on the back of my Home Hub 3. Not sure why that would have fixed it (if it indeed has). Any ideas??

Just on a Side note...

Anyone recomend (from the OcUK Routers Section http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=46&catid=1596) a decent replacement Router to use on BT Infinity Option 2 once I get connected???

I've heard a few stories about the Home Hub 3 (Dropping signal, freezing etc..), and having had a HH2 in the past It doesn't seem it's improved apart from design!!

I'm using TP-Link Homeplugs for my main computer, but I use Wi-Fi for my Laptop, Mobiles, Tablet, Kindle etc... I'd like a Dual Band (consecutive, not either/or) and a few of the necessary 'Bells and Whistles'...

Currently using a Belkin N600 Dual Band Modem/Router for my ADSL from Virgin National... But obviously I can't use that on Infinity!! :)

Cheers
Sim :)
