BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT Retail makes its unlimited products totally unlimited

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/...its-unlimited-products-totally-unlimited.html

A new contract is required just to get rid of the traffic shaping. :(

Not worth it.

Here's the BT page with the detail.

Unlimited BT Infinity 2, introduced from 1 February 2013, with totally unlimited usage and "we won't place any speed restrictions no matter how much you upload or download, even at peak times" looks good. Same £26pm price as the old traffic shaped and FUP not truly unlimited product, which is good compared with Sky at £30pm for 80/20 too :). BT Retail finally trying to be competitive and win back customers at last!

As my Infinity contract starts on 5th Feb, that's exactly what I was told I was getting!! :)

Seen as Infinity has been excellent for me I'm gonna re-contract so I can get the new package.

Just upgraded online, not exactly sure what's changed as it didn't say anything about removing throttling or anything. Guess I'll have to check when it gets activated on the 4th.

So for those on BT Infinity already do they just call up and ask to be put on the unlimited package or something?

My contract started in December but I don't mind another 18 if it means it's totally unlimited.

You can do it online, just login to MYBT click my broadband and then select the upgrade option.

so whats the general opinion of BT infinity? is it worth switching from virgin, where I have trouble streaming video in the evenings?

Good news about the Infinity unlimited.

I ordered mine 1st of December, to be installed today (it wasn't :(). I'm hoping it's this 'truly unlimited' variant then..when the engineer finally comes!...

Shouldn't have problems streaming video at all - my speeds have been a bit up and down lately compared to what they should be but I've never seen less than 50MBit/s minimum.

I would say its better going with an ISP other than BT for FTTC tho if possible - BT's routing seems a bit odd for a lot of people (tho latency is still well within reasonable levels) and I've had the odd evening recently where websites have been a bit slow to initially respond which seems to be down to some kind of proxy or something on BT's end.

But as far as video streaming goes I can hit youtube or iplayer, etc. any time of days and it pretty much instantly starts streaming with no buffering, etc.

Wow, that chart looks impressive. This is what Virgin looks like on a good day for me:

On a bad day, minimum latency shoots up for 100ms, and I get dropped packets all over the place

though they are upgrading things, this is mine on 6 channels down and 2 up, downloading at 12.5mb as we speak so that will be rice in latency you see at 12.15am.

@Loque

As Rroff says, it'd be an idea to look at ISPs other than BT Retail. PlusNet seem to be very good, and will be my choice if O2 don't get their finger out and deliver an FTTC product at a competitive price.

I've looked at plusnet too, but everyone knows the rule. You get what you pay for. It's substantially cheaper than BT, but for what reason? I know Plusnet is owned by BT, and run independently, so why is it in some cases, more than a tenner cheaper than BT, for seemingly the same service?

Also, how accurate are the speed estimations on the plusnet and BT websites? BT claims I can get 76/20 and plusnet claims I can get 67/20. Both of which are fast enough for me, but is it a reliable estimation? Does BT still suffer from that age old problem "the further away from the exchange, the slower you speeds are"? or have they changed with the times?

I was going to switch to "unlimited" (currently on infinity option 2) but it seems i'd lose my discount doing it online (currently get £5.20 off a month) so will speak to BT about it and see what they say.

I can't explain the price difference. PN is definitely better value for money because they only use UK call centres.

The estimate should be the same and it's usually a little conservative. Distance from exchange doesn't matter. Distance from property to cabinet is the important part.

Great news. After waiting two months and re my previous post about phone line being installed but no infinity technician turning up, I called up BT today. They spoke to Openreach and they said no record of an Infinity order. The lady said she'll forward an order to a team to sort out who can hopefully do it quicker as I've been waiting.

Getting internet is always such a kerfuffle! :(

What 3rd party router are people using with Infinity? The homehub 3 doesn't like a lot of streaming from the Sky+ HD box on demand & laptop streaming HD movies from upstairs and just want to get something good & reliable bu not costing the earth!

The HH3 is a pile of ****

I use a Neatgear WNDR37AV and it's great.

Look at the asus series of router such as the n56u
