Presumably they provided you with a phone service for 30 years, otherwise I'd be pretty miffed.
We ordered a phone line and Infinity Option 2 on December 11th - the earliest install date they could schedule was January 18th.
A contractor from MJ Quinn arrived early in the morning but said he was only here to install the phone line and that somebody "should" come by "later" once the line was active to install Infinity.
"Later" happened to be the next morning (a Saturday). This time though it was an Openreach engineer who only did ADSL installs and was puzzled as to why he was called out for an Infinity installation.
He said he'd book an Infinity engineer but since he was here he might as well do some prep. work and make sure the line quality was up to scratch. It wasn't. He spent around 20 minutes at the top of the telephone pole but that appeared to make no difference. Neither did spending almost an hour at the local exchange after that.
He came back to say that we needed an "advanced" engineer and we would receive a call "soon" with more information.
We called BT support the following Monday (21/01). Unsurprisingly they were clueless to the whole situation and apologetic about it. The best they could do was to make somebody from higher up call on Friday (25/01) and they also gave a free username and password to connect to BT Wi-Fi.
Nobody called, so we rang up BT support again (28/01). They were still clueless and promised somebody would call back today to sort out this mess.
I'm not holding my breath!

I've been debating on switching provider, as Virgin are just taking the p*ss lately. peak time speeds are down right heinous, and it's cost me a fortune ringing them to try and sort it. The best they could do, was claim that an engineer was booked to resolve the over utilization in my area, on the 17th of this month.
A serious question here: I live stream a lot, and I don't care so much for super fast download speeds. I would much prefer a reliable 50/20 connection, to the 100/5 connection I get from Virgin right now, which is horribly slow in the evenings.
What provider would you guys recommend for a "reliable" connection? Something that isnt going to be crippled in the evenings? BT have quoted me 76/19, which sounds great. But is it reliable?

I moved from Virgin to BT Infinity around 10 months ago I would never move back. The service for me has been superb.
Don't get me wrong, streaming isnt a problem. As far as the upload speed goes, even though its not very high (5mb) I can stream fine. It's the utilization in the evenings that is crippling my connection. I can't watch live streams at all without it buffering every 3-5 seconds.
What confuses me, is that when im watching a friends live stream, I know he streams at 3000kbps (3mb) and when I test my connection, it shows between 30-50mb, which should be more than ample to watch multiple streams at once. But for some reason, live streams will still buffer every few seconds.
Visiting the virgin forums, people are claiming its a routing issue on virgins end, because it also affects youtube.
This is why I am considering moving to BT infinity. I cannot be bothered with virgins pathetic network and its limits.
You've had no issues with slow speeds in evenings, or issues streaming videos from youtube etc?

I moved everything back to BT - line and fibre.
At the time I got an installation date 10 days after I ordered.
They dealt with Talk Talk - I had to do nothing. No need to call, no need to go through retentions, just order.
Was told installation would be in the PM.
Guy arrives at mine at 1:00pm and proceeds to move the Master Socket. He gets call at 1:30pm from the guy at the road-side box, half an hour later I'm told the line is synced at the 80/20 maximum.
Got a connection of 74/16 and it's stayed at that ever since.
No real issues to report. I did call their technical support one evening at 10:00pm where I spoke to a very knowledgeable person in an Indian call centre who solved the issue first time.
BT have been absolutely great for me.

Only complaint I've had with BT was during the initial installation arrangements ie. date and subsequent billing.... all of which were happily resolved. Been with BT approx 16 months now and still happy.

No. The only issue I had turned out to be a BT wide issue a few months ago. I get 76/18 all day every day. My GF streams most things and does so when I'm gaming and neither of us notice any slow down at all.

Wow, that chart looks impressive. This is what Virgin looks like on a good day for me:
On a bad day, minimum latency shoots up for 100ms, and I get dropped packets all over the place

Unlimited BT Infinity 2, introduced from 1 February 2013, with totally unlimited usage and "we won't place any speed restrictions no matter how much you upload or download, even at peak times" looks good. Same £26pm price as the old traffic shaped and FUP not truly unlimited product, which is good compared with Sky at £30pm for 80/20 too
