BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I started at about 60 down and 18 up... a year later and its now 37down and 8 up.... i guess the more people who get infinity on my cabinet the lower it goes :( Maybe vectoring will help if they ever do it.

At least it is very stable.

What was your estimate profile from BT? For me that is too large a drop and may as well regrade to a 40/10 package (my current deal). My line estimate is 60/18 and an extra 20Mb/s down not a huge deal though it will help somewhat for your ping but doubt it's noticeable.

Due for renewal now and time to look around for the best service but no one can beat BTs no network caps, throttling, and unlimited usage policy. Currently use 150GB per month and probably what most gamers and streaming savvy families chew through.

Slightly off topic,

Does anybody know how to order FTTP OD? my exchange is FTTP enabled and over decided I'm happy to pay for the install.

now i need to find who i need to pay.

If your exchange is FTTP enabled and that's how they've decided to service home users then you might not pay any more than FTTC. When you do an exchange check does it say "WBC FTTP" or FTTPoD. If it says WBC FTTP with NO FTTC listed then you might be able to get it the same as any other fibre connection. My exchange is FTTP enabled and i didn't need to go through FTTPoD. I paid no install and £50 or so a month for 300Mb down/20Mb up.

Is your phone service from a telegraph pole, check them and see if you have the secondary fibre splitters on them (cylindrical black tubes on top which would have newish wiring).

Question on moving home. I have infinity just now with a modem and an Asus ac66u.

Have just placed an moving order and will be sent HH5 which I obviously don't want. I saw a note that says to leave the modem In my current house and that my existing equipment wouldn't work in any case on the order. I'll be taking the modem regardless

Is this just bull? Last thing I want is to use the HH5

Just take it all with you... and yes it will work its just bt being daft and trying to get people to leave the white modems by making you think you cannot use them.

So last week I moved my HH5 back to the point where BT's cabling comes into the house (originally the master socket was connected to a bunch of crappy extension cabling) and my sync speed has dropped from > 60Mbps to 56Mbps. I was expecting the speed to increase, not decrease! Any ideas what could be causing it? HH5 stats below:

You may have been on the verge of DLM doing its thing and you turning off the router sped that process up.

Your line stats are very similar to mine, I've been stable at 70/20 for a few weeks. Swapped out the modem yesterday and I'm back down to 56 like you. So I suspect it will level off again around 70.

With your 6db noise margin i would actually guess your near to the max your line can do. People that can go faster generally have higher margins.
For example im on 80/20 but my max sync speed obtainable is 103/40 because of this my noise margin is higher to limit my speed mine is 12/18.

6. Data rate: 20000 / 79995
7. Maximum data rate: 26762 / 99596
8. Noise margin: 9.8 / 11.1
9. Line attenuation: 9.0 / 11.1
10. Signal attenuation: 8.9 / 11.1

Installed yesterday, seems to be alright. I can see the green box from my bedroom window so was hoping for max speeds. Does appear to be syncing at the max though?

Is it any good?

My connection dropped twice today and twice yesterday. Been rock steady for months.
Been getting lots of DNS errors in windows event viewer (yellow triangle) Windows logs, system.

edit* also it keeps changing from 2.4ghz to 5ghz wifi connection. Happens on my Nexus 5 and home pc.
