BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Slightly off topic,

Does anybody know how to order FTTP OD? my exchange is FTTP enabled and over decided I'm happy to pay for the install.

now i need to find who i need to pay.

Is there anyway for me to find out when my cabinet will be enabled?

I've noticed in the past month or so a new vented green cabinet has gone up across the road and on the earlier linked website I can see that this is apparently cabinet P2 within SS69PP, part of phase BDUK Essex 13b (but cannot find anything on that)

Would quite like to know a rough timescale for this phase naturally!

£50 per month is what BT Retail charge for their native FTTP product. FTTPoD is not native FTTP.

Monthly FTTPoD rental is going to be at least £200 ex VAT.

Openreach's new prices are even more than that ^

Fixed connection charge - £750
Distance-based connection charge - £350 to £6,125 (or more)
Annual rental charge = £1,188
(all exc. VAT)

In other news, 2 more days till i get my Infinity 2 package, received my homehub today.

What's the process of getting the engineer to move the phone line into my room? As for some reason the main phone box is in my parents room, have no idea why but it was there when we moved in 14 years ago.

Also, just did a check, following the telephone lines which run overhead along the street, using google maps i'm roughly 400-500m away from the cab, will i see at least 70mb download? as long as i get that and more than 15mb upload i'd be happy, The estimator on BT's website said I should get the 80/20 speeds.

According to that graph I should get in the 70's, any less and I'll complain about it, but yeah, will I be able to get the engineer to move the phone line into my room?

For reference (although things vary massively with cable types, routing, local noise etc) i am around 500m away from my cabinet as the line runs and i am (just) clinging onto full rate 80/20

As long as I get 70+ 15+ I'm happy to pay the monthly fee, I'm after the upload mostly.

Someone who's managed to get their master socket moved, can you shed some light for me? I've ordered the 80/20 package which from what i read I'll get an engineer, Will I be able to buy him off with endless biscuits and tea/coffee to get him to move it, its current location is not feasible as its in my parents bedroom, there are no free power sockets for it, there is no PC near that socket (Currently have an RJ45 poked through the wall and in to my sky router and then homeplugs) Its just not an ideal location, Can I get it moved in to my room where it would be much suited?

I got my infinity 2 installed last week, i stay a bout 200m from the cabinet but only get 50 down 9 up. Engineer explained i am 900m cable length from cabinet, no straight line to cabinet unfortunatley. Still better than the 6 down 0.3 up i was getting though.

@Uncle_Gravy I got my master socket moved into my office, the old master downstairs is unused but there to use for phones/Sky box, etc.

Was as simple as replacing the existing socket for the FTTC and faffing on with wiring. It was synced at full speed but isn't it always for a short while

All I had to to was ask nicely when they asked where the fibre was going to and the guys installed the socket and screwed the router to the wall. They said they often do it if you already had a professional installed phone extension otherwise you have to pay and ideally heads up with the pre-order for additional time and any potential issues with carrying out this work.

Not heard of anyone else getting it installed free without an existing line. Depending on what BT are charging these days, you can pay for a normal extension and standard phone socket for £35 (line goes direct from the master line just outside your house, mine is next to meters, and through your floorboards upstairs) then get BT to change the socket it out as I did.

So an engi never appeared, but this is 5 mins after being activated

400-500m away from the cab.

Now watch that sucka steadily drop over the next few days through no fault of your own.

Don't you dare even so much as fart next to the HH as DLM will whack a cap on your ass that will take months for speeds to even start to creep back up to where you started only for a thunder storm to trip your electric and DLM WILL STICK ANOTHER GODDAMN CAP ON YOUR DAMN ASS!!! This time it will present you with pings that you might as well send a letter instead as it would be quicker...

Damn I hate DLM.

I started at about 60 down and 18 up... a year later and its now 37down and 8 up.... i guess the more people who get infinity on my cabinet the lower it goes :( Maybe vectoring will help if they ever do it.

At least it is very stable.
