BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

No. DLM kicks in when the line drops frequently over a short period.

When I had infinity installed I turned the router off the first 3 days because I knew there was a line problem. Do your decoration then switch it back on when you're finished and leave it on :)

DLM kicks in when it **** well pleases... usually at the most inconvenient moment :S

If it wasn't for the fact it was so annoying BT's "blip" logic back in the ADSL days was hysterically illogical.

Don't turn the modem on unless you absolutely need it, until after decorating.

I doubt you'd lose much (2-3Mb) with DLM unless you disconnect a lot and drop a whole IP profile.

Hi, I upgraded my mums internet to Infinity. Now that she had a good speed she likes to watch Netflicks on her tv on an evening.
She says that Netflicks is not working\stopping but everytime I go up to my mums not only is Netflicks working but the speed tests are coming back with a good speed of 9 up and 31 down.

She thinks that it is the internet thats dropping on a night.

Connectivity to the Samsung UeH6400 is wireless and were using the bt supplied router.

Any ideas?

I need to get to the bottom of this as I really don't want to spend more time at my mums than I have to. Sounds bad I know but sher has 10 yappy ****zu's and I can't stand it.

Infinity 3 install

Finally moving to a flat that can get fibre (just as our current place gets hyperoptic installed - typical) and I have ordered BT infinity 3 (which I believe is FTTP rather than FTTC and a slightly different install to the infinity 1/2 I have seen.

Trying to work out how BT will install it:

1. What happens to the phone points? Do I still use them for Voice and something else for this FTTP service?
2. It mentions the HomeHub being next to the modem which will be in a service cupboard in the flat - what connects the two boxes? is it an ethernet cable as the flat has ethernet that would be great if I can use instead of running more cables
3. Can I use an Airport Extreme instead of the HH5?

I would check the wireless channels in use first. If you have an android phone download 'wifi analyzer' from the Play Store and check for an unused or lightly used channel.

I believe the phone points will still work in exactly the same way.
im not Sure about the cable, it might be Ethernet.
I would assume so, but I would leave the HH5 in plce for a few weeks just in case DLM doesn't like your APE.

Can anyone shed any light on this "self install" thing? I asked months ago and BT seemed to not really support it but now they seem to be.

Current setup is Standard - Unlimited Broadband up to 17 Mb. I want to go for Unlimited BT Infinity 1 + Weekend Calls.

This part of the BT site says it CAN be self install with an asterix saying they might come to optimise speeds: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/48324

What does that actually mean? My tracker says I can do 55Mb-78Mb but I only want the upto 40 Mb package. So no engineer since I exceed maximum speed?

Hi GregI

Mainly if you setup yourself and don't get close to the suggested speed 55 - 76 for you then an engineer might be needed.

But as you are going infinity 1 you should be fine. You should get the full 40mbit. If you don't, if you get 30mbit say then a engineer might be needed.

Update today

Very good and informative response after I contacted Bill Murphy - this response came from Liz Mallinson who I believe is Business Development Director, Next Generation Access Scotland, BT Group

Always found it frustrating with BT how you usually get really good results when taking it to the top but constantly run into dead ends trying to deal with it through the normal channels - if the normal support channels were even half as effective I wouldn't have to contact ELC directly :S

So does it kick in when it wants to or not?

Either way i'm assuming that if I lose a lot of speed i'll be able get TalkTalk to reset it back to original speeds?

Not contradicting EVH - but my experience of DLM has generally been that it has a bit of a mind of its own at times.

Back and asking for help again!

The new TalkTalk router has arrived today (Huawei HG663) and i've set it all up even though fiber doesn't go live till this Friday. Anyway after messing around in the settings by typing in 192.168.1.1 and changing wireless password and the usual, after I click off the tab I can't log back into my router again as the connection just times out.

Anybody know what i'm doing wrong? Tried multiple things like ipconfig, re-setting teh router and computer etc. and nothing seems to work. The only think I can do to get back into it is physically hold the reset button in and restore it to factory settings. Anyone know what the hell is going on? There's going to be an engineer coming out to us on Friday to switch this on but i'll be at work from 3:00p.m, should I ask him?

^^ I guess all you can do is reset it to factory settings if you really have lost all connectivity with it, im guessing you must have accidently changed something which you didnt mean to :)

Thats all the "engineer" will do for you anyway if you leave it, he wont know anything more about it than your or i, he will just factory reset it and be on his way i would imagine.

Ive not heard of the HG663 (I have an HG635 which seems to be the common "super router"), how is it? That model doesnt really bring anything up when googled....

Looking forward to completing on my new property next Friday,

One of the cool things is FTTP even though its over the road from my current house which i cannot even get FTTC yet!!

Line has been ordered with BT paid for line rental upfront for the year, saves a bit.

Next challenge is convincing the better half (my wife) that we need Infinity 4, but saying that at £50 a month im not sure im that mad.

Has anyone been able to get any deals on Infinity 3 or Infinity 4?

Failing that at least with FTTP i know i will get 76mb down 20mb up with Infinity 2.

Currently living over the road on 6mb down .5mb up :D

Are we allowed to link to reviews/articles on other sites? I am writing up the install i carried out of cat 6 cabling and other bits and bobs i have done so far, this all up on WeGotServed as a new reviewer to the site.

As long as they don't sell products which OcUK sell, and there are no swears :)

Don't forget, £50 per month is not much more than some people pay for Sky TV. Plus you will have epic speeds to download as much as you want and watch via Netflix etc. Personally, I'd dump sky and go for the fastest internet connection I could afford.

Yeah i've been doing that and all i've done now is basically leave everything at default and just change the WiFi password and I can still log in fine without it timing out so i'm guessing i'm unticking something and it's affecting it but I don't know what. I would have thought that the 'engineer' visit on Friday would be to fit a new BT socket?

And my apologies the model is Huawei HG633. The worrying thing is that I can't find any documentation online or any firmware updates for this model, any idea why?

Cheers EVH. Just seen the adverts do rotate through competitors though so cannot link.

I agree re: pricing, I have heard of other people getting an early adopters discount so will see if I can wangle that. Also my wife will be working from home a fair bit so her company may contribute towards the cost :-)

Just been on the phone to BT, trying to get a better deal on my infinity, 30 mins, they were offering nothing, they just cant compete with plusnet prices.

Ended up asking for the mac code.

Interesting because I rang them in October and got £8 off for the next 18 months! They are owned by BT Group, so they're just playing hardball.

Were you at the end of the contract?

Yes im 3 weeks from the end, i sent an email to the exec office after the call , 1 hr later got a call, infinity 1 unlimited for £13.65 a month, im happy with that.

I've been doing some searching as I'm getting bored waiting for my cabinet to get upgraded for fibre (nearly the rest of my area has already been upgraded).
When doing a search on the ADSL Checker at www.btwholesale.com I get the usual expected speed stats but also this
Note: The DP is internal to the end user premises.
What exactly does this mean to me trying to get fibre, am I going to have a lot of bother?
Or does this just mean that the main cabling comes into the block of flats and is then fed internally?
