BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So, install day for FTTP finally arrived and BT/Openreach never fail to disappoint. BT engineer arrived promptly at 8am to run the fibre into our flat. However, he then informed me that the fibre was run into the block in two places and that the side of the building we're connected to is full (apparently he has known this for about 18 months) and openreach need to do something to create capacity in the other side of the building.

Engineer disappears and I then get the joy of 3 hours spent on hold and roaming around the BT telephone tree before finally speaking to the FTTP team to be told I'll need to wait a week before they can chase openreach and then have to wait to book in another appointment. So no broadband for at least another 2 weeks it seems.

It just staggers me that their management of information about their infrastructure is so poor.

I've been doing some searching as I'm getting bored waiting for my cabinet to get upgraded for fibre (nearly the rest of my area has already been upgraded).
When doing a search on the ADSL Checker at www.btwholesale.com I get the usual expected speed stats but also this
Note: The DP is internal to the end user premises.
What exactly does this mean to me trying to get fibre, am I going to have a lot of bother?
Or does this just mean that the main cabling comes into the block of flats and is then fed internally?

This

main cabling comes into the block of flats and is then fed internally

It means there is a multipair to you premises and the internal individual connections are fed from a DP inside.

Where lots of houses have dropwires to the house from a pole in the street, the DP is on the pole. Your DP is inside your block of flats and feeds multiple customers...

You plug the White into your phone line. The Red is used if you have an external modem. The HH5 has a modem built in so plug into the White.

Cracking deal. :o

Having a few issues with our Plusnet fibre home move. Openreach came out bang on time for the new install and then went off to work on the cabinet. Came back and said the wrong cabinet had been activated

Anyway rang plusnet and they said that he put on the report that the cabinet has faulty ports and Openreach have given a repair date for about 4 weeks time although they may revise this date next week. :(

Glad we decided to get Sky for the new place as before we watched everything on demand, don't think my 5gb giffgaff tariff will like that!

I have bought my first house, its a new build and will have FTTP. I have a postcode of the showhome and BT reports that it can get 300mb and samknows backs up that this area is FTTP enabled.

I am for now assuming that my house around the corner will get FTTP when it is built.

The dilemna is 200mb for £40 worth it? Is 300mb for £50 worth it? or will it be only for nerd e-peen willy waiving?

I have a synology box that downloads when I am asleep and at work so it makes no difference to me really. 80mb infinity 2 is so fast anyway it is only moments download a 10gb file or game anyway...

i am conflicted... peoples opinions on Infinity 3?

The problem is that if you can get FTTP but don't really need the speed then you're stuck unless a provider offers a lower speed. And I don't believe anyone offering FTTP offers a lower speed.

I don't think 80 meg FTTC is worth £30 from Sky but I do think that 40Meg for £10 is worth it, even if I could have got 23Meg DSL for nothing.

I just got infinity 2 (80/20) its only been a day so far and im syncing around 75/16 and its bloody great. Honestly I don't really need more than that, as its rare for me to download anything so large that it takes longer than the time to make a cuppa tea, maybe once a year on OS reinstall day or something.

That said, if i had the money i'd get 300mb for the e-peen.

What is the upload rates on the infinity 3/4 packages?

BT website says I can buy any product from 40/20 up to 300/30. I'll probably go 300/30 as I don't smoke or drink or go out doing lavish things much. I could even run a gameserver from my bedroom with upload rate I think.

Again for the 5th week in a row - true to her word about weekly updates - I got this emailed!

Good Morning Chris good news Cabinet 12 is now fully commissioned and accepting orders from service providers.. You should speak to your service provider for confirmation that they can provide service.

Regards Liz.

Fingers crossed that plusnet/Bt/sky are all up to date with their systems etc!

Grats. I hope it'll be worth the wait. :p

Who are you going to go with?

priced up various options (BT/Sky/Plusnet) - ended up sticking with sky. Got Firbe Pro (expected between 54-74mb) for £20 a month, £100 credit on my account, reduced line rental and some money off the TV package for 6 months. The fibre is only a 12 month contract so will shift everything once that is finished probably.

Can't believe how good Liz was - totally true to her word and bang on point every monday morning - super impressed with her.
