BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Hi i would appreciate any help if anyone could offer any!

I have had solar panels fitted to the house and then some electrics work and the router had a very unstable couple of days. My line since 5am this morning has now been dlm`d and I am now interleaved.

My question is how long is it until I can be put back on fast path. I am on BT infinity

I was told that my line was exchange only 3 years ago when an engineer visited to sort out an issue.

However The BT wholesale checker is now saying I can get BT infinity and that im connected to a cabinet.

I thought you couldnt get fibre on a EO line?

Are they putting cabinets outside exchanges for EO lines now or something?

BT have been putting in cabinets to allow EO lines to get FTTC.

Place and order and you'll find out pretty quickly if it's going to happen or not.

Ive ordered and it says everything is on track. Have an engineer coming out in 10 days.

Is there a way to find out where the cabinets are?

It should be very close to you, if you had an EO line which means you're already close. To then have a Cabinet fitted you will not be far away...

Just look around your street or a few blocks around. I'm sure it will look nice and shiny. :p

It'll look similar to this:

If you're connected to a cabinet you're not on an EO line any more.

But yes, that's what they're doing. Same thing just recently happened where I live although it's not available for ordering yet.

I've also seen terrible reports about Hyperoptic's service.

Not really surprising - sniff of gigabit speeds and you get all the heavy users jumping on the bandwagon and ******* it 24x7 with torrents, etc. and then surprised when its heavily congested...............................

What I'm most disappointed about is the upload. 10Mb seems to be the best the line can support. I was hoping for nearer to 20 :(

Worth a try

Upload a large file to and from your BT Cloud account... (Ordinance survey minecraft file is 1 gig)

Mine was capped at 10 until I hammered the up stream and then it switched back to the 19 I was getting up to the point they started messing around with my line.....

That's how I resolved it.....

I posted recently about a failed HH3 and I was probably going to be using a mothballed HH5 as a replacement.
On searching through draws I've come across a router which I purchased - but didn't really get around to using:

Asus RT-N56U

I see there is firmware available dated April this year, so appears to still be getting support from ASUS.
Can anyone comment on the capability of this router?
Worth going this ASUS & GT Openreach modem combo as opposed to HH5 and GT Openreadh modem combo?

Cheers.

I'm thinking of leaving Infinity and trying one of the other providers as I can get a much cheaper unlimited package with the same speed.

Anyone here switched over?

Yes I preferred them to BT. Better CS and no routing via Sheffield. You can get Quidco cashback and Amazon vouchers as well when you sign up to them.

Recently moved to BT Infinity with a Home Hub 5. I’m intrigued by the USB socket enabling network sharing of USB drives.

What’s the deal? It’s only USB 2.0 but that’s not a problem as the WiFi is more likely a bottleneck, but what are the speeds like?

Two options, just sticking a 32 or 64GB USB memory stick in the back for a handy bit of local network scratch space or connecting a more substantial 2TB USB drive for backup / NAS type duties.

Not sure about the large USB drive though as it’ll need separate power and by at the end of a pretty skinny network connection.

Are decent memory sticks likely to last indefinitely when continuously connected/powered or die after a few months?

What do people tend to connect to this socket?

So my HH5 has been dispatched all ready for Wednesdays instal.

But reading the comments here makes it sound pretty cack.

Any recomendations for a new router?

Id like something like the HH5 without having to use external modems if possible.

Cheers :)

I bought the HG612 modem off the bay (actually turned out to be an ECI modem) to go with my ageing billion 7800n but haven't bothered to connect them up because my HH5 has been working flawlessly, maybe im just lucky.
Apparently the all-in-one's are all pretty cack and seperate modem + router is the way to go.

Thanks mate.

So I haven't posted here I think since I first got Infinity, but I just wanted to ask a question in case anyone knows the answer.

I've got FTTP with BT. If I wanted to switch, are there any other providers that could take me on? Or would I need to get a normal phone line installed?
