BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Do you live with a friend/partner?

Yes, with my partner. So I can just apply for a new contract with her name? Why did I not think about that ffs (assuming this is what you mean) :D

Just a thought, would there be down time in the service as I would be applying as a new customer?

I'm not sure about downtime, but it's obviously possible.

You may get charged additional fees. I can't remember if it's the voice or the broadband, but ceasing one of them can be chargeable.

Plusnet offer BT Sport as an option. It's of no interest to me, so I haven't looked in any detail, but it is there.

I'd say you are almost certainly looking at downtime. If you just cease the broadband, then the number will remain but it would be like putting in a brand new broadband order, isn't it currently 3-4 weeks?
If you cease both then you'd probably be looking at the same time.

If you just cease the broadband, won't the account still exist on the "number" - so maybe you still wouldn't be treated as a new customer?
Cease all or nothing and that is going to leave you without broadband for some time.

You'd be signing up to a new contract in her name, so you'll possibly have activation fees, but as long as you contact them before your current contract ends, I don't see why there would be massive amounts of downtime.

We tried this with Sky and it was possible but we didn't go with them in the end.

When does your contract expire?

I'm already out of contract as of a month ago.

Would appreciate some advice here if possible please, chaps/chapesses.

It's been a long wait for a fixed line broadband connection at this address, lived here since '96' and due to long reach to the exchange (6.5k as the crow flies but line is probably a lot longer) I've never been able to receive a BB service, telephone line works fine though for voice and also worked ok back in the day with dial up modems.

My BT cab has recently undergone the FTTC installation and so BT are now saying they can provide me with a service, cabinet is a fair distance away so quoted speeds are quite low for FTTC.

If I'm honest I'll just be grateful to receive a working service at long last. Potentially though with the cab a fair distance away and an old line there could be problems, particularly referring to the HH5 here and it's reported flakiness on some lines.

Activation of service is tomorrow, in your opinion should I just connect up the HH5 and hope for the best or use a separate modem with HH5 as router? or completely ditch the HH5 and use separate modem/router? I've purchased an unlocked Huawei HG612 v3 from ebay so could use this with the HH5 or I'm open to purchasing a third party router. My cab by the way is I believe the Huawei 288, please confirm from picture. Not sure how much difference this makes but I seem to remember further up the thread that matching modem with cab can help with connection stability/speed. Anyway sorry for the ramble but any advice you can give greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I'd start by using the supplied equipment. It'll make life a lot simpler if you do have problems and need to fault find with the ISP.

Thanks, will probably take your advice here.

I've got little confidence in this line due to its age and long reach to both cabinet and exchange, it also seems to take a strange route from the cabinet to my place, it goes from the cab into the village where it enters a grey junction box, from here it goes across the poles to my place (I live way out of the village). I've mapped it on google maps and it's approx 1.1k to the junction box and then a further 800 mtrs or so to the cab, so in total it must be getting on for 2km but could be longer due to meandering route of line. We'll see how it goes anyway, cheers.

My area is showing that fttp is going to go live soon. They've been installing fibre all around the village with little pole mounted green junction boxes dotted around.

My understanding is that fttp is very costly compared to standard copper to the cabinet (i.e up to £2000 if you're 1k from a box, I'm about 300m). Is this correct?

It looks more like a service for business users of which this village has about 4.

Any info would be appreciated from people with the knowledge.

Not really expensive at all. Had mine for about 15 months. I'm paying £34.99 a month for 200mb down and 20mb up. I believe the 300mb is more expensive at about £55 per month and 76mb is the same cost as the FTTC option

Don't want to be that guy, but only 20 upload? I get that with the 80meg package.

Anyone got any tips for getting a better deal for an existing BT customer wanting to switch to fiber? It's a pain looking at the price plans for existing customers when the new business rates are like half the price! Of course I could just move from BT to Plusnet which is something I'm seriously considering within the next 24hrs but if I can just move to a new BT plan and keep BT sport that would actually be ideal.

Whilst I'm not particularly bothered by BT Sport, the fact that brand new customers get a far far better deal then existing "loyal" (in my case can't be arsed to sort it even though I know I should) customers.

Example

New customer :-

Unlimited up to 38mb speed £29.00 a month including line rental. As well as a £49 one off activation charge and you get bt sport pack free.

Muggins here :-

£25 per month plus existing line rental and £49.00 activation fee. No sports pack either. As I pay £19.99 a month line rental that makes it £45 a month. £15 more for the same package!

I imagine a call to the "help line" and a bit of haggling will get that down but I would far rather just be able to go online and do it quickly and easily.

I have the same. Even the top package (300Mb in my area) is only 20Mb up.

I'm on the 300Mb product, I have 30Mb up. I do currently have a speed issue where it won't go above 200Mb down so have raised a fault with BT. I've only had the broadband installed for a couple of weeks and never seen it go above 200Mb yet I'm paying for the 300Mb product so there is an issue somewhere.

Mind you 200Mb is still pretty damn fast :D - especially after coming from a 10Mb product in my previous house.

When does your contract expire?

You are currently without internet access/phone/TV at home because you disconnected your partners services as you thought the contract rolled over and didn't understand the switching process and now you're giving him advice to book a disconnection and re-install? You have to see the irony in this situation.

For the OP call BT, choose the disconnect option and speak to the retention's team, they will offer you a reduced rate to keep you as a customer, they should be able to match/beat the new customer offers. If they can't look at TCB/Quidco and compare Sky/BT/Plusnet/TT etc. and see who's got the best deal for you and switch. Switching gives near zero downtime (well as long as it takes you to swap the routers over or enter the new u/p). If you do want to go with BT then check carefully about how long and when broadband could be reactivated on the line and make sure you understand it'll be with a new phone number etc. Personally not switching just because of BT Sport seems crazy, I understand they start charging for it when you're out of contract unless you take a new one.

I'd download my whole steam library over and over again just for the fun of it if I had 300Mb down.
