BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Address GLASGOW, G40 1PT on Exchange BRIDGETON is served by Cabinet 73

neighbour is on the same cabinet 73, but it also shows this:

VDSL Range A (Clean) 80 74.9 20 20 -- Available --
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 80 52.5 20 14.5 -- Available --

No room in the cabinet is my guess.

I've noted today that BT seem to be filtering some website's on the internet ! EG over 18 sites and blocking them ! when they do this my internet speeds drop massively , I've also noticed that when they remove these filters my speeds are super fast ! Does anyone know how I can stop BT from sticking on these filters because they seem to be doing it randomly on my line ? I have all the family filters and all that rubbish off.

Lol, go ask BT why they won't let you watch porn!

HaHa thats not my issue thats just an example of why I think my connection is so slow some evenings , when the filter is on that stops us from going on naughty sites my internet gets screwed but BT don't seem to have it always on as some of you probably have noticed also.

After a few weeks of waiting, finally :D

BTO have been at the cab for 3 days now so a fair bit of work done, all the footpath dug up.

Well the Home Hubs have been steadily improving in my opinion since HH3 and I thought they had finally brought out a superior product with the HH6 (Smart Hub) and what a pile of cack it is. Had it a few weeks and it was working marvellously. Not been following the BT forums for a while and didnt realise its had several firmware updates which have broken the thing. My symptoms are the Wifi keeps dropping and no matter what I do I cant connect to 192.168.1.254 anymore. (no its not changed default gateway still this address). Today when I checked it had a green light on it. Switching it off/on several times and leaving it switched off couple of times for 20-30 minutes did nothing. Decided to get HH5 from the loft came back down and its working again yet still cant see 192.168.1.254 config pages. Checked BT community and seems I'm not alone. People getting fed up receiving refunds and having problems in general.

Now looking round for a suitable replacement or just go back to HH5.

I thought something was up last night :(

Yep the HH6 just crapped out again. Put the HH5 back and its connected okay I can even now browse to 192.168.1.254 and see the config of the router.

Time will tell if it is okay and not the connection at fault in the meantime a TP-Link VR900 is on its way to me.

Stopped using my smart hub over a week ago and went back to using a Netgear Nighthawk D7000. I was sick of the HH restarting and freezing :(

No issues with the Netgear, has been rock solid again as it was with Sky Fibre.

My HH6 has been fine so far...

check to see which firmware it has. Latest is dated around 11/10/16 SG4B10002236 and is meant to fix the HH6 problems.
problem is you cant stop it from updating to dodgy firmware and you cant force it to update either.

HH5 has been fine for about 24 hours. Put HH6 back within an hour connection went. My TP Link VR900 has arrived so going to try that soon.

Is it possible to change to lower bandwidth connection easily, or do I need to just call them and threaten to go with Sky / something else unless they lower my monthly price and speed?

I took BT infinity 76Mbit connection a year ago, but since then they've hiked up the line rents and raised the lower level connection to 50+Mbit -> I can't justify paying extra any more.

I'd be ok with ~50Mbit if it doesn't come with other drawbacks than slight downgrade of maximum download speed.

Just ring them you dont have to threaten them at all just say you want to go with BT Infinity 1 as its cheaper for not much less benefit. Probably find they give you Infinity 2 with a discount.
Does seem a bit silly now having two price bands with speeds pretty much near each other. Bet it wont be long before they ditch Infinity 1 and just have one pricing structure.
I get around 59Meg so for about £6 cheaper you would think I would get max 52Meg.
If it wasnt for the fact I get BT TV free I would probably start looking around as the line rental charge is ridiculous. It doesnt actually cover any costs its 100% profit.

It covers the cost of the actual line.
Indeed...

  1. I don't think I should pay for the line because I don't use it for voice calls.
  2. I expect someone to fix it for free if something goes wrong.
Don't get me wrong line rental costs are too high, but there is a cost there to be paid.

The line rental should be set in legislation with all of the money going back to Openreach in a controlled way. Suppliers shouldn't be allowed able to add a profit element.

Let the providers using the infrastructure compete on the service elements.

Yet you do use your line to provide you with 24/7 internet connectivity, therefor you do use your line nigh on every minute of everyday. Openreach will also repair your line FOC providing it is their line at fault and not a DIY extension etc after their NTE5 socket.

No it doesnt. There is no continuing cost of the line for BT at all. Once its in thats it. BT dont have to do anything for the upkeep of the phone line there is zero running cost. This is from your house to the exchange I`m talking about which is what this Line Rental Charge is for. When was the last time you saw BT come out and do maintenance upkeep on your line ?

Years ago when Mercury were bought over or going bust there was talk of forcing BT to scrap the line rental charge but for some reason Ofcom lost and BT won cant remember the details. It was proven then that line rental charge was a very small percentage of the profit BT achieve and they could actually do away with it and not make much difference to their profit.

Sorry will stop now this is off topic.

To get BT Infinity or not.. I see that it's £10.99 a month (& £18.99 month line rental), 12 month contract on a 52mb line. Only downside with this package is the £49 Infinity activation fee..

Hmm.

What about all the equipment in the green box, the exchange and the backbone. I guess that just runs on fresh air? Who pays for upgrades and refreshing equipment or repairs?

In reality wholesale line rental charges have been dropping steadily, yet retail cost has been increasing.

Do you know why? Because the 'internet' costs have been dropping year on year and 'value added' features have been bundled in. Most consumers are too stupid to realise A+B= actual cost hence the new Vodaphone marketing 'doing away' with line rental, yet the actual cost is about the same.

Whats actually happening is phone only retail customers are getting milked for every penny and effectively subsidising internet customers.
