BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Try plugging directly into it, rather than the faceplate.

That's what I've done. No difference. I've had a quick look online and people mention noise margin and line attenuation a lot but I don't know if what I have is good or bad!

Maximum data rate:
5560 / 21691

Noise margin:
6.2 / 6.1

Line attenuation:
25.4

Either your connection has a serious fault, or the website had the wrong information.

Either way, you need to either request and engineer or get out of your contract.

That looks fine. Not close to the exchange judging by the line attenuation. Is LA still to the exchange with fibre or just to the cab ? Do you know where your nearest fibre cab is ?

According to SamKnows it's 1.5 miles away using roads, not sure about distance as the crow flies if that matters?

Edit:

1.1m away from exchange in a straight line. Is that far?

FTTC goes to a street cabinet not the exchange. The availability checker will tell you what cabinet you're connected to. BT don't give out cabinet locations so you have to look around your neighbourhood for a green cabinet with the number on it in white paint. The actual DSLAM cabinet will be right next to it or up to 50M away.

https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm

This site gives you the addresses a cabinet serves so you can get a hint as to where it might be. Will be harder to find in dense areas but it'll most likely be along side a main road.

To find your cabinet number go to the BT DSL Checker site https://www.dslchecker.bt.com

Type in your phone number and hit the submit button. At the top of the next page it will say what cabinet your on.

Then go to codelook https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm

Type in your phone number and hit the lookup number button.

On the next page there will be a list of information. Find the place called: Locality or Use, and underneath that it will show 1 or more area locations listed. This will probably be your town. Click the one dated the most recent.

On the next page click the link that says All X Fibre Cabinets (were I've typed X will be a number). A map should be at the top with a lot of dots on it. Put your arrow over the dots and eventually you'll find one that lists your cabinet number. Thats the location of your cabinet.

I'm in the process of switching from sky adsl to by infinity, the switch is scheduled for Wednesday 1st Feb. Today I got the dispatch notice for my router and when I checked the progress noticed this message on my order:

We have not received commitment for the order yet, so it may become delayed

I can't get any sense out of BT India does anyone know what this means? Am I likely to be without Internet?

But would I be able to get a higher speed from another provider if the estimate on that site is saying 17mb and that's what I'm getting? Have BT somehow cocked up and said I can get 30-40mb without properly checking?

It happens. When I moved the checker stated estimates of 60mb or so. Actually getting about 20. An engineer did another test and confirmed its correct and the online test is wrong - wasn't thrilled but got 80% off for a year to stay so putting up for now

Was that with BT? 80% off for the year would keep me happy!
