BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT Business just sent me this email at work. A leased line for £97.50 + VAT per month seems a bit difficult to believe....
I'm guessing it's EFM - the from price will be the cost of a two-pair 10Mbps link or something equally useless.

Also while I have no real issues with BTs products, I would never ever ever ever want to get involved with BT Local Business. The companies they select to cover each region are just awful at everything they touch. We spent two weeks getting IP address information out of them once.

It won't be EAD for that price, presumably it's being sold as a last-ditch option for Very Important People who have to video conference from their country estate.

For an idea of prices currently - it's an awful product and only really makes sense if you absolutely have to hit a price point (real fibre is so much cheaper if you look at cost per Mb) or there are issues with availability.

I am using my own router rather than the smarthub with my new 900mb connection. Does anyone know a way of using the digital voice phone line without the smarthub? The Smarthub will not work unless its the primary router and that's not going to work for me!

Well after having the promised 110Mb upload for the first 10 days or so, this last week has been capped at a firm 30Mb. Did a factory reset today and now it's up to 50Mb.

The speedtest on the Bt app has automatically opened a fault so will give it a day or two to see if the upload gets back to 110Mb.

Had my FTTP install today - the engineer arrived at 0900 and was away for around 0940 - very painless install. Turns out my router is still awaiting dispatch although a quick phonecall to BT resulted in a 2nd router getting delivered tomorrow and some credit to my account. I've only went for the 150 option but I think i could be tempted with faster speeds.

Looks like BT have sorted the issue with speedtest.net from Scotland. Now consistently reports 940-960Mbps where before it was capped at 700 ish.

Going by other posts it looks like this was causing a lot of complaints from customers along with them wondering why they are unable to reach the speeds over WiFi.

Anyone have any recent experience on timescales for BT activating FTTP on pre-existing GPON installs? Just been to look at a new build and contemplating options post lockdown.

Helped my brother in law move in 2 weeks after lockdown (early April) to a new build - he had an Openreach modem pre-installed in the house already.

Initially we was told by BT it's just the standard 2 week activation lead time, but I managed to get it down to 2 working days (when we said need it as key worker) as they came up with the idea of activating broadband only, if you wasn't bothered about the voice/landline element (which is VoIP anyway) which they'll sort later in the year when things calmed down we was told. Apparently they had done this for a lot of people already the bloke said at the time.

In reality I gave him a spare Plusnet Hub and connected it up to be idle, somehow they activated it later that same day on a Sunday afternoon (maybe not intentionally) but his internet just magically connected after we placed the order. Then on the Tuesday his BT Smart Hub 2 landed in the post.

Guess it's all remote work and switches if the house is already wired and ready with the modem. :)

Anyone have the Complete WIfi?

My disc went to a flashing red. I tried reconnecting it and nothing helped. It's fine when connected to the hub using an ethernet cable, but as soon as that's unplugged it just starts flashing red.

I rang BT and they sent out a new disc but this one seems to be exactly the same. I can't seem to work out what i could be doing wrong as i'm following the guide to the letter and when i run the location test it says i should move the disc further away if possible so it's not like it's struggling for signal.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how Openreach go about cabinet upgrades? And whether they're actively going through schedules currently?

My connection at my cabinet is limited to circa 30-40mb and CodeLook States "100% area up to 30MB" also, other cabinets from our exchange are newer and/or have been upgraded for 80mb+ and as CodeLook states "100% area up to 300MB", also confirmed by someone I work with who's off of one of these cabinets.

I can see that the cabinet is a ECI 128/256 FTTC cabinet, if that helps.

If your speed is limited to 30mb then a cab upgrade won’t do squat, you’re too far from the cabinet to make a difference. You’re on FTTC, Fibre To The Cabinet. Those places with up to 300Mb are FTTP services served.

Sounds reasonable, GPON (effectively modem) is in, so i'd imagine it can be done without a truck roll. I haven't had a phone plugged into the existing landline for the last 8? years and have VoIP handsets, so no worries on the lack of 'landline' provisioning.

Have you turned WPA off? Try turning it back on, you can turn it off again once the disc is paired.

Post the stats from your router to see if you can go any quicker, and do a check on https://broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com and post the results. As MissChief said, there's no such thing as a cabinet that can only do 30Mbps vs. one that can do 80Mbps - it will be down to line length if you're limited. The CodeLook "area up to 300Mbps" figure is based on Ofcom data and is likely referring to the availability of Virgin Media.

Balls :(

I don't suppose they'll likely provide FTTP over telegraph poles? :P

I recall from when they had to re-cable me up to the telegraph pole that the sync tops out at 41mb.
