BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just did a port scan using the all service port scan on this: https://www.grc.com

And it turns out my snmp port 161 is open!

I wonder if this is the same for you guys?

Do you think BT leave this open on purpose for remote update of firmware etc?

According to this, seems like it is left open intentionally.

Move on and forget, I really doubt that someone has that much interest in you.

Got a letter from bt to tell me my modem is getting replaced with a newer version soon due to unreliability, anyone had theirs replaced yet? Mines been trouble free since February.

"In your letter it explains the next steps - you'll be contacted by our partner Kelly Communications offering you a free appointment to fit your new free Openreach Modem - the modem swap takes about 30 minutes."

30 Minutes of nothing .

I had mine installed in June and I have never had any problem with it. Dont know whether I want it replaced.
Mine has been going since october last year but I'm still going to have it replaced. If they are going to the trouble of replacing them all they must have very good reason.

I suspect eventually they will fail or will give lower speeds on the 17a profile.

My max attainable rate is lower than others have acheived with the same line length so I'm hopeing the new modem version will change that. Be a good chance to quiz the engineer about a few things too.

There have been other people who have had theirs replaced already, there is a sticky on BT's forum about it. They are replacing all modems issued before August this year.

That's pretty good. I've had the modem completely fail twice in the last 13 months (second time installer mentioned the large number of failures). I imagine the installation visits cost them a fortune.

My exchange has a ready date of 31st December.

When can I place an order?

My exhange had a ready date of early Sept and I'm still waiting. You won't be able to order until its actually available.

Fox it's a complete lottery to when you will be ready to order, the date usually changes out of the blue for better or worse. Best to to do it find your nearest fibre cab (next to normal one) and see if it's powered up (you can hear the fans running if you get close enough to it) if your cab is powered up I wouldn't think you will have to wait long untill you can order it.

Ouch that's worrying. Does the checker tell you your house can have it from September still?

No its never said available for my house but that the Ashford exchange was enabled. I've seen two BT PDFs that said it was available now when it wasn't. I've been on the phone to BT and all they go by is the phone no. checker. That said they are rolling out FTTP here so it may have taken longer than they planned. My parents live a couple of roads further from the exchange and they have shown its available since last week.

Ah, I guess my situation is different to yours then as I'm not going by the exchange Ready for Service date but by the BT checker which says:

BT Infinity
Fibre optic broadband
We're rolling out our fibre optic network to bring you faster speeds of up to 40Mb. 18.9Mb download
3.7Mb upload 31-December-2011
