BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

What do your ONT lights suggest the fault is?

The PON light is solid red, which apparently means a break in the fibre. I've been power cycling it first thing in the morning, and in the evening since it went down, just in case it needs to re-sync, but no luck.

just a quick gen up point. i got BT's FTTP the 'not very fast version' (£62/month) to see how it was. it's alright. and for the first month they throw a 'hook' in (a one month, free trial of 500 d/l)

i've just checked the BT site because altho their 900mbs offering was £82/month i decided, because i spend an insane amount of time online that an extra £20 isn't going to hurt

the 900 offering is now only about £69. to rise to £72 next year. i don't know if it is an offer for those already on FTTP, but when i first checked about a week after installation it was, as said, £82

£69/month for 900/110 per month is a no-brainer, as far as i'm concerned. now i'm just waiting for somebody from BT to remove the hook ;-)

Are you on a business tariff as that seems quite expensive. As I am in the process of getting the 900mb tarrif with Plusnet and it will be £39.99

i won't lose sleep that there are cheaper deals out there. i'm alright with it. my previous FTTC deal with landline was costing me more for slower dl/ul.

these days i don't even check to see if i can get cheaper car insurance. perks of old age :-)

You're going to be spending almost double what that service can be bought for from premium providers. There's not penny-pinching which you can argue is the smart thing to do if you're well off and time is your most precious commodity, but this is spending substantially more to get less.

£69 a month is very high. We're not talking about saving £2-3 a minth, I reckon you could easily get that down to £45-£50 a month without even trying that hard. At least go to one of the utilities sites and see what you're paying is far too much.

You can currently get 500/500 here for £27. 900/110 for £69 is pretty mental?

Do people forget the price is different depending where you live? And only quoting the first year price isn't accurate either at least give the average monthly price over the term.

Aquiss is £55 a month for the same 900/100 OR service, no mid contract price rises, static IP, and better support than BT. It’s absurd to be paying £69 for OR 900/100 outside of A&A or a business connection.

I always though aquiss was quite expensive, based on this thread its really not. Best ISP ive been with, after ISP hopping for best deal for 10 years Ive just stuck with aquiss for the last 3.

I pay £40 a month through plusnet for 1000/110. £69 is nuts.

You do pay premium compared to switching providers every time your contract comes up for renewal. But you are never affected by price rises, you get a static IP address, plus IPv6, and exceptional support. I personally think it’s worth it.

An example for anybody asking "what difference does good support make?". We have an IDNet connection, a member of staff on Hyperoptic is having issues connecting to some of the services hosted on-prem and using IPv6. We do a bit of investigation and it seems like IPv6 traffic isn't moving between the networks, and closer inspection on the Hyperoptic connection shows that it's not able to connect to a *ton* of IPv6 networks.

Ticket opened with IDNet before we noticed the Hyperoptic connection was faulty, resolved in a couple of hours and they said that Hyperoptic were announcing their IPv6 routes through LONAP but not sending any traffic as well as dropping anything coming in. Support case with Hyperoptic wanted a router reboot and now they want to send a tech out for a core network fault.

I am never going to value saving £10/month if the alternative is having to deal with people who should not be employed in the role they're in.

Yeah I work from home and £10 a month or something for support and stability is very worth it for me. I think Im due the new customer offer soon.

Just noticed full fibre is now available in my area. BT told me not in the next 6 months last week.

Looking at the options below it looks like the best price to speed option is probably the 300Mbps option. Only £6 more than what I currently pay.

I am currently on the 74Mbps package and most things are fine except for downloading games via steam etc which can take hours.

The other day a 62GB patch took 2hrs.

As much as I want the fastest available my brain thinks the 300Mbps would be the best option for the price.

The 500Mbps package on the other hand has a noticeable step up in minimum guaranteed speed.

I wouldn’t worry about the minimum guaranteed speed too much. Fibre is pretty much on the nose of the rated speed at all times unless there’s an issue somewhere preventing that.
