BT ordered to block pirate links

All this means that everyone and their grand parents will have a vpn. Who knows how long it will take before the first ISP offers a vpn service.
Though what is likely to happen is distributed torrent services will start that are impossible to block even without a vpn, these technologies are already popping up.
It's a real shame that we might end up like this, with half the internet fire walled off. VPNs are not that expensive but they are a hit on performance, sadly the internet is now becoming in the hands of those who wish to destroy it.

We would not tolerate Counterfeits R Us on the high street – if we want economic growth, we cannot accept illegal rip-off sites on the internet either," he said.

the problem is we do.

first example i can think of is beats headphones. small shops e-bay e-tailors etc etc

but on the actual blocking of these sites, anyone with enough savvy to use these sites and download from them will have the savvy to get round their isp blocking the site.
good publicity but innefective action

They do nothing but increase the hatred for those pushing these, they are easy to get around and many people are currently doing so.
It's a futile effort, as long as traffic can move around, so can copyrighted material. There are no measure that could be taken that would ever stop it.

So how long will it be until BT inevitably block ThePirateBay ?
And how long until the other ISPs: VM, O2, Sky... also do so?

This is only the beginning. The government will use piracy to justify internet censorship. In reality the government are really trying to shut down "terrorist" websites and disarm the public.

What incentive will ISPs have to go to court instead of just bowing down to the media companies? Probably very little if other ISPs are also threatened. I am just saying that the ISPs are unlikely to go to court for every case and will just block any site they are requested. This could very easily create a messy situation, would not be surprised if innocent sites end up being blocked.

And so it has begun. They got the foot in the door with newzbin and just you wait every few months they will want something else taken down. And then another and hey before you know it welcome to firewall China sorry Britain..

BT have already stated that they will not block it without a court order...

Anything? Because it is going to cost them a heck a lot of money if the requests start rolling in.

Pirate Bay. Why would it cost BT that much? It is the media companies that will need to apply for a court order not BT. If the government really wanted to block things then they would just use the IWF's list, much more covert and no need for court orders, letters and press releases.

Why would it cost bt?

It's not them who has to go to court.

Yeah I was wrong, I remember on some other site which I can't remember that it would cost BT a bit for legal fees but it won't cost them a penny.
Again I am still worried about innocent content being blocked, I don't think they will be able to filehosts as they do still host a lot of legal content. Same with usenet.

It needs a court order so as long as our legal system remains robus enough. That's shouldn't be an issue. It certainly is the government trying to remove freedom of information or some big CT.

Not that it works, they've already released a client with encryption that is meant to beat the firewall.

The courts will never catch up with technology and any attempts are certainly going to be a drop in the ocean for these sites. Most of these sites have registered users, which means it is trivial for them to contact you.
I don't think any technological measures are going to work and really the only way for media companies to stop piracy is by directly competing. I know you say this cannot happen but it's happening with spotify & other services. As soon as they get better, it will be much more attractive to use them instead of piracy.

It could cost BT dearly. A large amount of their traffic is torrent based, P2P etc.... and they know that. If they suddenly start lying down and blocking every site requested, people will start cancelling contracts with them.

How many 14 - 18 year olds would want an ISP which blocks file sharing sites, or filters out the most controversial / funny / interesting websites once they see what the real WWW looks like ?

It was bad enough when they decided to run with PHORM without telling people - but 99% of the public had no idead what they were at.
