They do nothing but increase the hatred for those pushing these, they are easy to get around and many people are currently doing so.We would not tolerate Counterfeits R Us on the high street – if we want economic growth, we cannot accept illegal rip-off sites on the internet either," he said.
the problem is we do.
first example i can think of is beats headphones. small shops e-bay e-tailors etc etc
but on the actual blocking of these sites, anyone with enough savvy to use these sites and download from them will have the savvy to get round their isp blocking the site.
good publicity but innefective action
So how long will it be until BT inevitably block ThePirateBay ?
And how long until the other ISPs: VM, O2, Sky... also do so?
This is only the beginning. The government will use piracy to justify internet censorship. In reality the government are really trying to shut down "terrorist" websites and disarm the public.
Citation beyond paranoia and conspiracy theory needed...
What incentive will ISPs have to go to court instead of just bowing down to the media companies? Probably very little if other ISPs are also threatened. I am just saying that the ISPs are unlikely to go to court for every case and will just block any site they are requested. This could very easily create a messy situation, would not be surprised if innocent sites end up being blocked.
BT have already stated that they will not block it without a court order...
Anything? Because it is going to cost them a heck a lot of money if the requests start rolling in.

Why would it cost bt?
It's not them who has to go to court.
The courts will never catch up with technology and any attempts are certainly going to be a drop in the ocean for these sites. Most of these sites have registered users, which means it is trivial for them to contact you.It needs a court order so as long as our legal system remains robus enough. That's shouldn't be an issue. It certainly is the government trying to remove freedom of information or some big CT.
Not that it works, they've already released a client with encryption that is meant to beat the firewall.
Pirate Bay. Why would it cost BT that much? It is the media companies that will need to apply for a court order not BT. If the government really wanted to block things then they would just use the IWF's list, much more covert and no need for court orders, letters and press releases.
How many 14 - 18 year olds would want an ISP which blocks file sharing sites, or filters out the most controversial / funny once they see what the real WWW looks like ?
